WORD! You're about 5 hours east of us, but Asheville has never had more snow on Christmas day than we had on Saturday. I can't complain though; at least I have a garage as of 4 months ago.

It usually snows here a few times a year but only a few inches and they are usually gone the next day. But the last few years have been different.

Supposed to be in the 60's again the weekend though so maybe I can get my lazy ass out there and make some kind of progress.

I could'nt believe I was there for that! I visited Biltmore Estate on the 12/26 and drove from Myrtle Beach. I was spending the week in Myrtle Beach.

After looking at 15 pages on this build, this is the cleanest build I seen so far from what you have. I seen guys that have garages and nice tools but the cars come out like ass, lol. Hats off to you my friend, that colt is clean as hell and you have a lot of patience on you hands, lol.

The first few pages back about hyundai elantra parts, I have a 95 hyundai elantra and I did measurements because I wanted to build something awd. So after having a hyundai excel which the wheel base width was 53' inches (narrower) vs DSM/CSM is 56' (wider), I couldn't do a awd swap in the excel. After being upset about it I decided to build something else, so right away I was thinking of a colt so I did the measuring and that's how I found out DSM and CSMs are the same. Well I decided to be nosy and did the same for the hyundais and that's when I found a 94 elantra with the same 56' inches as the dsm/csm. That's when I sold the excel and bought a 95 hyundai elantra for $500 bucks auto with 80k for miles, lol.

To get to the point (sorry), I used the car everyday as a daily beater for now until my truck is done. As things progress I noticed anything from a DSM fits on this car, here is a example what I have replaced in the 3 years I owned this car that are same to a DSM:

The engine is a DOHC 1.8 (4G67)

- alternator
- suspension (gst 1g)
- axles ( I used a 5 speed axle on the driver side with no leaks or no issues at all!!!)
- timing belt and tensor (from a 2.0 turbo new)
- TCU off a 2g fwd TSI ( it shifts smooth and works great, no issues)
- wheel bearings (gst)
- timing belt
- MPI rely off a 1g gst (91-94)
- 90 CAS
- 2.0 N/T MAS (the one on the hyundai kept throwing CEL codes)
- 2.0 turbo brand new spark plug wires
- I used a 2 pods A pillar gauge pod off a 1g that fit really good (shaved look)
- I wired a SAFC 1 with the stock hyundai ECU (same wires as a DSM install)
- I even mounted a 1ga talon front bumper on this car because I could find a hyundai bumper in the junk yard.

That's what I replaced so far that is DSM related, it could be a lot more things that would fit I'm sure of it. Pretty much the elantra I have is a cousin to DSM/CSMs,lol. I'm just so glad that everything a DSM related can fit on the car which makes everything so much easier to build and I can't wait to start the AWD swap, lol.

Just to sum things up, anything for the most part of DSM parts, will fit in the 94-95 Hyundai Elantra. As far as the 91-93 hyundai elantra, I'm not 100% sure but I know some one with a 92 and he said he uses all DSM parts in the car.

I measured colt axles to a 1g gst and they were the exact same size, so I'm sure that you shouldn't have problems axle wise.

Thanks man! You guys don't know how much your comments really help me on my builds. Sure I could have thrown this thing together months ago and had 10k racked up on the odometer but I'd much rather take my time. Like I've mentioned before, I do quite a bit of work on my house as well but we all have priorities. To me, my colt is a way to relieve stress and just unwind. When it starts to be a pain in the ass I just step away from it for a few days until I feel like working on it again. Right now I can't wait to work on it but its been in the 30's and 40's all week so I'll wait :P .

As far as the Hyundai's are concerned I love finding them at the yards around here. 99 percent of the time they are complete and untouched. I guess nobody around here realizes just how similar they are to dsm's which is great for me. I hate that I gave up on my old 94 elantra project. They are nice little cars and you just can't beat them for the money. Maybe I can find a good deal on another one in the future.

This is inspiration for do it right or don't do it. I am so glad i bought that trans off you and good luck with the awd route, I pulled it apart and everythings in great shape. Once this is done this should be archived as a how to do it build :)

I dont mean this in any way bad but im really glad your not over doing it, Keeping it clean, semi reliable, and fun with a huge attention to detail. Subscribed :o

Not much of an update but I did grab some parts today while browsing around at the junkyard. The first thing is a 98 impreza bumper cover. It has some damage up where it attaches to the fender but I am planning to cut my original bumper just under the body line and mate the two together. Who knows if it will work but I'm going to attempt it. I grabbed the lights and plastic covers too but I took them off to remove the bumper cover.

I was looking at the same car and liked the oem sidemarker lights that go in the fenders. Well I didn't want to just pop the lights out because I wouldn't have a way to mount them. I also didn't want to lug around two fenders with me. So what did I do? I put a drill bit in my cordless impact and drilled a few holes in each corner around the lights. Broke out the tin snips and started cutting and ended up with these. Now I can trim them down neatly and weld them into my stock colt fenders because that's how I roll.

So maybe we should add a little more time to your build schedule huh? :drinkers:
LOL!!!!!!!

I feel both the pain and the joy in that comment.

OMG, that's the same bumper my friend Jamie used. It's absolutely beautiful on a Colt.

I just read all 15 pages. Thanks a lot man! I should have been installing a transmission! But there's too much great info here. I know what to do about my throttle body vacuum ports now. Where did you get the set screws? Is that a Lowe's item?

Thanks man! My intentions were to throw this thing together after the 1.5 tranny went out and have a nice DD. Well once I tore into it I just had to detail the engine, then one thing led to another and here it is over a year later and it's still not running. After seeing pics of these AWD swaps on here and watching your Youtube videos I knew I had to swap mine. This set me back a little but I knew I had to do it. It will run eventually I promise, I just have no idea when.

You deserved a break from working on the GSX anyway. I got the set screws from a local fastener place, Tractor supply or Lowes/Home Depot may have them as well, I'm not sure. I would definately hold out for SS ones as the black ones will rust almost instantly. McMaster Carr has them for sure and any DSM'er can find enough stuff on their site to place a nice little order. Same with Allen's Fasteners. I have ordered a ton of stuff from them and it arrives only days later. They have a nice selection of 10.9 zinc metric bolts too. The ones with the flange on the head. Much cheaper than buying them from Mitsubishi.

For the vacuum ports, just take a drill bit slightly smaller and drill through the tubes. Keep working your way up until the tube starts to spin, then either back it out with the bit or grab it with a pair of vicegrips and yank it out. The hole in the throttle body is the perfect size for a 10-32 tap. Then just put some sealant or tape on the set screw and you have a clean way to block the ports off.

I've been watching your You tube videos too, Jafro. (What turbo is on your 2g?) You guys both inspire me with the excellent quality of work you do. Right now I'm trying to install a JDM front bumper on my Galant VR-4. My buddy wanted to trade and he had the JDM one. Only problem is the PO of his car was such a hack I'll be doing some fab work to the bumper and some repair to the cover. I keep saying to myself "How would that Jafro guy or Chris do this?" I ended up painting a bracket that can't even be seen once the bumper is on!

BTW, I've found that Ace usually has a much better selection of fasteners than Home Depot or Lowes. If you guys have them in your area.
