ever since the fast the and furious people have been talking about double clutch. i thought it was a stupid idea the only time a heard of people doing it is in truck and old cars that cant get into gears. two days ago i meet this dude at a party and he was in SMS a well known car club in adelaide (they got supras skylines mr2s ect and they race up in the hills like inital d but not 2 cars racing its more like 5 of them at the same time) anyway he said that they double clutched when there racing and he said you go a lot faster when you do it.

does anyone know about this double clutch carp and if it does work because i still think its B U L L S H I T and the people that try to do it are idiots, but i might be wrong

That's bullshit if I've ever heard it.

Angelmon. Think of the internet as one big encyclopedia. Instead of asking about "double-clutching" look it up. The answers out there.

Here'a link to what I've found. Enjoy :P

You only need to double clutch when your driving an old "crash-box" trans without any synchros (or when your synchros are stuffed). Nowadays we have this thing called "T-E-C-H-N-O-L-O-G-Y" and when our crap Mitsy trans wont shift at 8k rpm we just install a double synchro setup. 8)

Sometime we all have to face the fact if you drive a turbo Mitsubishi you will have to learn how to do trans work. That or have deep pockets. :(

Angelmon,

I think they're talking about heel-toe downshifting which involves double clutching (doesn't have to though)

steps:
1. slam your brakes with your toe
2. clutch into neutral
3. while still on the brake, use your heel to "blip" the throttle to rev match
4. clutch a gear down.

this lets you hit a turn at high RPM without destroying your clutch and avoids engine braking.

and if you're wondering if they still use this technique even with all our modern techno-crap, yes. they do!

I double clutch when downshifting but not when shifting up.

What he said. Why would you push the clutch down twice when you can push it down once and get the same effect. God invented syncros for a reason (so racing would be easier)lol.

"Power shifting" is where you dont lift (completely) off the throttle on gear changes. Its very difficult to get right on a FWD (with decent grunt) without roasting the tyres into the next gear.

You normally wont hear the BOV actuate if you do it right.

Good for killing synchros and shift rails in Mitsy trans however...

Yeah, with double clutching xlr8 hit it right on the money. I always laugh when Vin says that line. It's utter bull in a modern syncromesh gearbox. Even in dog-box cars you can avoid it by power shifting and heel-and-toe downshifting.

First of all, Senor Diesel was talking out his fart hole when he was talking about double-clutching on an upshift. If you drive like that, you deserve to get spanked in a race.

Double-clutching does work for downshifting. It brings the input shaft speed up closer to matching the speed of a given lower gear, making the synchros work less, lower gear selection easier, and less wear on the internals of the trans. The sequence:

1: Shift into neutral
2: Release clutch pedal and rev engine at the same time (amount of increase in engine speed varies on car and desired gear selection)
3: Press clutch and shift into desired lower gear.

With practice this can all be done in less than half a second.
