I stumbled across an AWD '89 Colt DL Wagon in the junkyard. I beleive the engine code is 4G61, it was a non turbo. What is the differnece in this AWD trans and the W5M33 trans that comes with the 4G63T AWD DSM's? Is the transfer case the same too? Thanks

Gearing is different. The Galant GSX 1991-1992 AWD came with the same tranny you speak of, the final drive gearing is 5.209 if I remember correctly. The Eclipse AWD final drive is 4.55. If you take that tranny you MUST take the trasnfer case and the rear end to match it, otherwise you will have problems. Oh and yes the transfer case is different also, not interchangable with Eclipses.

By the way this tranny is supposedly weaker then the Eclipse AWD. The updates to make just as strong would be rebuilding it and installing the new updated syncros, replace the pins with heavier springs. The rear end I would pop the cover and make sure it is not damaged from being towed, most likely the drive shaft was not dropped. Also inspect the trasnfer case, most likely it could be damaged from towing.
OK?

Oh yeah I forgot to mention when "they" say it is a weaker tranny, it because it is in a car that weighs 3700lbs. :o

If your doing what I am doing and dropping the 5W31 AWD system into a Mirage hatchback, then I doubt you will have any problems at all. The bonus is that it will be a screamer up to about 130mph due to the gearing.

Thanks for the reply. I was going to use it for a backup trans for my talon or just sell it. It looks like I'll be leaving all the stuff there. Unless anyone wants me to pull it for them.

Some n00bie's questions here..

Meaning that the Galants' W5M31 is "shorter", i.e. in the same speed the engine runs with higher revs than Eclipse's W5M33?

I need to "shorten" my W5M31 even more (without touching the rear diff). Is there any other means than to change the gears themselves re-newed? Any single point within the tranny where the final drive could be manipulated?

So do you mean they're actually equally strong by their structures (parts used)?

W5M31 has a taller final drive gear meaning it gets the car moving quicker, but not higher reving, your top end is limited compared to the Eclipse W5M33.

As for weaker, those who have been saying W5M31 is weak were using it in a 37000lbs car, verses me which will be using it in a 2400lbs car. So the only parts I have seen that need to be replaced or upgraded are the syncros, pins, and maybe the forks.

Same goes for a 3 bolt rear end verses the 4 bolt rear end, you can use a 3 bolt rear end in a lighter car and have no problems like those in the 3000lbs plus cars which snap the rear ends. This is why they upgrade to the 4 bolt rear ends.

Thanks, mystery,

So from final gear - W5M33 would be more suitable for me. But since I've got one W5M31 already, and spare ones are far easier to find here in Finland, I'll go for it anyway.

So apparently, there's no means to shorten the main gear in the tranny without touching the shift gears themselves. OK, then my plan is to move gear 4 becoming 5th and 4 becoming 4, and have the 1-3 gears&syncros (hand)made entirely new, closer to each other than originally. That will do...

If I cannot make it last racing conditions, I'll need to reconsider W5M33 then afterwards. Well, in that case, I'd need to replace the rear diff, too. :x

Again, thanks!

No that not what I said. You can switch the final drives out of the trannies and rear end so long as they match you should not have a problem , and same with the transfer cases.

So lets say you want the tall final drive gear of the W5M31 with the Eclipse W5M33 1st thru 5th gears, that can be done.

Basically you have to swap in the rear end, and then swap the transfer case, and then remove the W5M33 final drive and replace it with the W5M31 final drive.

Got it!

I'll put it up with a full stock W5M31 drivetrain that I already have, and then see what to do about it. Depends also on whether I find any W5M33 parts here..

Thanks!
