Thank you for your comment, I am very envious of people that can tig weld well, but as you say, just practise good techniques and in time, the welds will get better.

As far as the tungsten stick out, in that particular picture, I had to get in between the acute angled point of the flange and pipe, so I stuck the tungsten furthur out, so I could initiate the arc i.e if I didn't stick the tungsten out furthur, then my cup would hit the pipe. I tried to compensate for this, by increasing the gas flow to shield the tungsten and the weld puddle. Typically I have done what you said, 1 to 2 times the cup size.

I have been driving the car daily with the 3065 , however , We found a problem with the ID1000 injectors even after getting them cleaned. One of them was causing a misfire, after testing and testing, we swapped out to some old school 650 cc injectors and the car idles perfectly. However 650cc injectors are not even CLOSE to being enough for this 3065 at even 8 psi of boost. So hopefully this weekend, I am going to install my OLD school RC engineering 1200cc injectors into the colt, which should give me enough head room, to at least run 22-25 psi on gas.. :)

The messed up part is that these injectors, were just brought back from cleaning. Sooo I have to send them back to Injector dynamics to get fixed. It never ends

Kinda funny that OEM Denso injectors work for decades. I've had a '90 TSi that had 334,000 miles with OEM injectors and my mother's '90 TSi has 270,000 miles with OEM injectors.

These bosch EV injectors "types" are definitely a little more sensative to debris, as the tolerances of moving parts in the injector themselves are not as sloppy as the old style.

I don't even want to tell you how many times I have had to clean my 2150cc injectors......

Bosch recommendation is 5 micron for nominal capture of AT LEAST 82 % From the last paper that I have seen. The closest thing on the market is from Fuel lab at 6 micron of filtration--- trying to find one that is ethanol safe is a little tougher to find yet , without paying an arm and a leg.

Just run something like 16 Denso 450s. 4 banks of injectors on the intake manifold. LOL

Not too many updates...

I have been revamping the fuel system slightly, first up was a small foot print 10 micron fuel filter set up from XRP systems.
Image

Followed by installation of my old 1200cc RC engineering injectors. I have been dialing in these injectors slowly and for the most part just working on the driveability portion of the tuning. Here is a quick snap shot of the first ROUGH shot of a WOT run through VD :

Notes for the file
1)Target afr up top in the low 10s so that needs to be leaned out
2) Actual boost is 23 psi to 24 psi, i.e the incorrect logging equation for boost
3) Latency adjustment in operating range is too high ------0.5ms from 12v to 14v
4) Peak load is showing a significant drop in battery voltage, so might need to step up to a larger alternator
5)Need to play with the boost controller a little to stabilize the boost curve
6) peak timing is 7 degrees
7) 93 octane fuel

Image

the graph is promising, but I wanted to share the characteristics of the turbo and the motor to everyone.

enjoy

Been Driving old girl for the last month or so everyday, it is quite the fun little car in the snow, with its short wheel base.

Here is a quick shot, taking it for a stroll on the back roads ( oil pressure sending unit is crap-hence high number)
Image

A little project that I completed for my friends wife-- it turned out good

Image

Which brings me to my next project, which I am excited to begin: Long tube, expansion chamber style , two piece exhaust manifold.
This should be a pretty involved project for me, as it combines, engineering principles utilizing physics and thermodynamics, as well as fabrication and metal working constraints. This also gives me the oppurtunity to learn some of the intricate parts of tig welding.

I am building a small fixture so that I can work on it , without a car present
Image

and without the stock manifold in place: A pretty simple start.
Image

Next I will have to get some more steel, so that I can simulate the engine bay constraint points. Thank you for looking and Merry Christmas

Happy New Year to all, Hopefully 2014 will bring all the goals you may desire.

Santa was really good to me this christmas, where I seemed to get everything that I asked for on my list

First up the torque solution front engine mount for the colt- this thing made a world of difference in regards to engine pitching
Image

Then all the accessories for my first tubular manifold for the colt... merge collector, flanges, weld els, tubing etc etc
a shot of the collector
Image

and my son and I figuring out how to put this puzzle together
Image

and a couple of shots of the colt in this frigid time of the year
Image

Image

More to come as always

Good to see AdamRX7 and the car still around here! ;)

Must be a blast in the snow! Larger drifting circles than say with a FwD?

Yeah been busy with marriage and a son. I'm glad you saw potential in this little car. I like to check up on her. If you ever sell her let me know first ;)

Whats up adam .. its been a long time. Yes the colt is doing pretty good for the most part. It has been a fun project for me and now with the 3065 it should get a little more out of control than it already was.

:supz:

Tubular Header Fabrication Attempt

Key notes :
1) Stainless flanges
2) 1.5" Tubing
3)Runner length 28 inch
4) Stock dsm turbo locations
5) Head flange to radiator 9 inches
6) flange to timing belt 3 inches
7) height limit 6 inches from top of flange
8- No provision for dipstick ( will be removed)

One of the challenging things for me in regards to this manifold, is the proximity of the turbine inlet to exhaust port of runner number 3. With that being said , I had to get creative with the location of collector in regards to that specific runner. Inorder to try and accomplish this, I had to pie cut the entry to the turbine housing, as the picture below illustrates. Keep in mind that I was also trying to ensure that I can get to the bolts and nuts to attach the manifold to the turbo , as well as the cylinder head.

Image

Once I had this portion oriented how I wanted, I began to construct Runner #4 as it would be the longest one in the manifold, and where I need to get a given length. A shot showing the collector , runner number 4 complete, and the start of runner number 3
Image

here is front shot, showing how far down runner 4 goes down, also I hope I have enough clearance for the wastegate that is off the turbine housing.
Image

side view
Image

Runner 1 and 2 are going to "side wind " past the timing belt area inorder to attain that 28 inch runner length

More to come as I move along...

Critique, laugh, reengineer, enjoy etc........

Finished up runner #3 , I like the way it turned out.. I basically tried to make it follow the path of runner #4 , while trying to attain 28 inches of length
Image

Next I planned my attack on #2 and number #, these are just the start of them, so they are not completed yet

Image

a view from the rear, looks like a convoluted mess..
Image

and now some over all shots to kind of show you what it looks like as a whole
Image

Image

this is alot of fun.. I won't be making another one again.. it is quite labor intensive. But I suppose everyone needs a hobby,

see ya later
