Assuming a Zero mile engine, anywhere from -500 to 500 if someone had it built/built it. If joe blow built it in his back yard and it got rained on and was exposed to dust, or a bad machine shop built it, or it was some guys old race engine, then I would say around -500 because your wasting your time and money installing it. If it was built by a reputible shop or person I would say around 500 is a fair price for an engine that someone got tired of there project and decided to sell. Expect to pay over 1000 for one that is being built for you by a kick ass builder. 2.4/2.3 motors aren't really worth it, as regular 2.0s can make the same power per mod. If you are going fwd anything over 2.0 is dumb as you don't need any more torque off the line. If the motor has no warrenty or is undocumented as being built by a awesome builder, I would either walk away , or take a chance with offering 250.
IMHO

You said basically everything I was thinking in the back of my head! I thought it looked like a deal but didn't realize how cheap it actually is to build a 2.0

u cant say its a 2.3 cause the OP didnt say what block or crank/stroke he has.. just that it was a 2.4 stroker which is why I asked what it was cause I have never heard of a 2.4 stroker.

2.4 Liter Race Build.

The same 100mm stroke as the 2.3l, but with 87mm or larger pistons. This gives a little more displacement and allows you to unshroud the valves.
