Yesterday my car started knocking when it starts in the morning. Its only that first cold start of the day (its 60-70 outside) and it knocks very loudly for the first 5-10 minutes its on. It seems to be coming from the belt side of the engine and I can't pin it down.

Really makes me nervous I might put a sunroof in my block soon. Any ideas or previous experience with something like this?

EDIT: I just checked again and it is still making the noise. It really sounds like its coming from the valve train like a loose rocker. It was ticking a little a few weeks ago and I fear the ticking turned into the knocking. It does speed up when then engine speeds up its just hard to hear over the engine noise. I am at work and don't know if I should mess with it on my lunch or just wait till Saturday.

You probably have lifter tick. Very common issue. Time to change out your lifters for some better "3g lifters" which don't tick as easily.

It turned from a tick that I was ok with to a horrible sounding knock. Should I tear into it to tighten things or just replace it? The head was just rebuilt and resealed 5000 miles ago.

It has always made a lot of whring noises from the belt side and I figured those pulleys needed replacing soon.

does it sound like this????

http://www.streetfire.net/video/is-my-e ... 152953.htm

THis video was my old dsm and the noise ended up being a bad timing belt tensioner. I replaced it and the noise went away.

I re-used the tensioner on my 4g61t in my 89 GT and its now making the same noise in the morning :O, the noise goes away once the engine warms up a bit.... SOmething i have to fix now.... before it lets go and bends all the valves in my lil 1.6L

Sort of. It started making that knocking noise then the belt slipped. The tensioner is getting replaced this week so i will see if it went away. Thanks for the info.

Did replacing the tensioner solve your problem? I have noticed a similar noise to the one in the video, not nearly as loud,in my motor a few days ago. Kinda faint but I hear the similarity.

I somehow received the wrong tensioner so another is coming in the mail. The valves are fine it starts with a different tensioner and runs great i just want a new one on it so this doesnt happen again.

As far as the noise I dont know yet. The pulleys were very noisy before and all but one was replaced (BS pulley). It is currently making a loud whining noise after being cleaned so it needs replacing too. Once it is actually road worthy again I will tell you if the noise went away.

just curious how is it possible the hydraulic tensioner could make a noise like this?

The one I had that failed will not hold tension. If you put it in a vice it will smash all the way down with little effort. I have another used one that will only move 1/16-1/8" before it stops like it is designed to do. I would assume it makes it bounce around instead of actually holding tension. If it is actually making the noise that is.

ok sorry to thread jack but im having the same noise i thought it was the lash adjusters but i already have the 3g lash adjusters installed. when i built my engine 25k ago i installed a new t belt tensioner but i guess im going to try and throw my old one back on.

the noise will eventually go away when the engine gets warm but on a cold start its a very nasty sound.

is there a way to ruin the tensioner if you put it in a vice to compress it when your installing the timing belt?

I don't know if you can hurt it but it does say to compress it slowly (normally it wont let you compress it fast if its in good condition).

You should only be able to compress it a little at a time then it gets so stiff it wont move. Wait about a minute then try again and it should move a little more.
