Not too much lately. We did a boost leak test yesterday. The first one since I put the new intercooler on. We found three leaks. A nipple on the throttle body we had capped off had ruptured. It was shooting air out about 3 feet out of the hole. A pretty big leak. I can only assume this has been there since the new stuff went on. As I have not been able to get the car to idle since it went back together.

We also found two tiny tiny pin holes in some of the welds on my 90* elbow after the MAF before the throttle body. Probably not enough to make a difference, but they are there none the less.

We ended up having to put my stock full size radiator in yesterday. We had our boost leak tester rigged up. And when we flipped the switch that valve was wide open. We thought it was closed. It took about 3-4 seconds and faster than I could put words to my mouth. I just stepped back and waited for the bang. The small pipe in between the intercooler and j-pipe slipped out of the j-pipe coupler. It ended up hitting the radiator. We got the car back together and finished the test. We let it warm up and found a pin hole that was shooting onto the intercooler pipe. Just the tiniest hole. Once I got home though I found a small puddle in the garage on the floor.

I think that radiator was on its way out. There was already damaged from before when the first night I had the new setup on. The same pipe slipped off and hit the radiator that night. So it is not all bad. I had to get a new one anyway for the new turbo. And I would have had a hard time finding someone who would have wanted that dinky thing anyway.

But it hit 28psi yesterday in the heat of the day. Two more than before in the heat. So It should do 30 now at night. Coolant temps dropped 30-40 degrees. I was cruising at 145-155 on the highway during rush hour traffic. My idle came down from 2000rpm to a more tolerable 1000rpm. My air/fuel came down from 12.2-12.5 to 11.6-11.9. So sealing up the leaks only made things better. Except it is running even richer at cruise now. It is now in the 13's. I am out of sliders down low. So I have to do a full retune and take fuel out globally. That means I have to add fuel at the 50hz and add fuel to every fuel slider. Not to bad. A few pulls is all it should take.

The one good thing. I took a few family members for a ride last night that have not seen the car at all yet. It spun the tires pretty hard all the way through the top of third hear. It has not had ANY traction issues up until this point. I did not log the runs, but the wideband was right on. So I think sealing up the boost leaks netted a little bit of a gain.

Yah.

Steven

A few things.

Over the past two weeks I took it upon myself to do an entire chassis wire tuck. I finished yesterday and test drove the car to work today. It took 85.5 hours total to complete the project. WOW. But in the end I do feel it was worth it. The engine bay looks very nice and aside from where the two fuseboxes come together on the firewall, the interior just looks sick.

But the best part about the whole project was the weight savings. I did remove a few small things, probably less than 10lbs total, but I lost 60lbs more over the past two weeks. I feel this is as far as anyone can take one of these cars without removing the bumpers(looks bad when you do so(sagging)) and cutting metal out everywhere. I have not cut at all on this car. Just two small holes for the hood pins and that is it. But yes, I gather I lost 45-50lbs just in wiring in the car. And this car still has headlights, reverse lights, blinkers and all markers. Everything to stay legal. I figure there is another 5-8 pounds if I put the car in race mode.

As I noted above, I installed hood pins. The stock latch release was just hanging there and in the way now that the dash is all but gone. I had pins left over from the mirage so in they went. It is a rule requirement at Bonneville anyway.

And last but not least, after being into DSM's for the past seven years I finally have my first set of aftermarket camshafts. I ended up getting a great deal on some Brain Crower 280's from a local. I figure that was enough cam for the 1.6L and stock valve springs. I would have liked some FP4R or FP5R cams, but at this point in timt it is not meant to be.

I am still working on some issues. I hope to have the car tuned with the new cams in the next few nights. Then I hope to break into the 12's finally. I am .03 seconds away. I hope the cams and 60lb weight loss will get me there. Along with fixing three boost leaks.

For the record, my car now weighs 2160lbs. 2300 with driver.
Steven

Small update. The car did run a few twelve second passes. All 12.9's. With this big gear tranny it just does not have enough down low. It pulls well on the big end though. I also learned how to drive a little better. I can now cut 1.8-1.9 sixty foots all day in this car. I attribute my 12.9's to this more than fixing the boost leaks finally and adding the new cams. The new cams did pick up 2-3mph more consistently on the back half than the stock 1G cams did.

The other new thing is I removed the power steering from the car. Took it for a test drive around the neighboorhood. And with the slow speeds around here I feel it was worse case scenario. car wasn't too bad. It was tougher to steer, but not all bad once under speed.

Latest time slip looks like this.

R/T- 1.019
60'- 1.925
330'- 5.400
1/8- 8.345
MPH- 83.95
1000'- 10.832
E.T.- 12.933
MPH- 107.44

Next thing I want to work on is to build a front and rear bumper for the car. Either lighten them up, or make new ones. This car is looking more like a standing mile car as I go, so lighter is where I need to be. And take a few hours to relocate the alternator to the back for the new turbo. The placement of the downpipe and location I have chosen for the exhuast means the alternator has to move. With my manifold I have no choice anyway. Just have to pin down Nick to do this.

I also am thinking of installing a intake air temperature sensor soon. As well as saving some pennies for four EGT sensors for the new turbo.

I also put a new water pump on this week. Mine was beginning to leak. It ended up only having four of the five bolts for the pump installed. I vaguely remember smelling coolant and having a small drop every now and again last year but could not pinpoint it. The car was continually getting hot and did not like to idle. And would leave coolant on the ground every time the car moved. No leaks and cooling system is back to acting normal.

Here are some pictures of the engine wire tuck. The inside is not much to look at. But I will try and snap some shots. Without a dash it is ugly. But would be great if I had one.

The car is getting awefully close to becoming a full time race car. I will try and keep plates on it. But I don't expect more than 250 miles out of the car next year.

Those pictures make your car look orange, and thats never cool. :finga: Nice work though getting another colorado 1.6L CSM into the 12's. Your still gonna have to prove to me that it will go 180...I should have the gearing for 190 mph when I get my car back together. We'll have to do a high speed roll for shits.

Good work Steven. Can't wait to see you break into the 11s. You'll have to lose the Hyundai valve cover though... Keep us updated! Nice job on the wire tuck BTW.

When all our cars are running well, I want to do a four car wide race with you, George and his 6152E, Jason and his new 65mm turbo and me with the holset. I want to see if we can get HAV to video tape it for us. I think that would be sweet rolling through the tech center at retarded speeds against each other. Two 1.6's vs two 2.0's.

I have no doubt the car will pull some serious mph. I more than likely won't attempt it with the 16g. Not enough to pull the gear. I am not sure this car will do 11's with its current tranny without doing a bunch of other work. It might get closer with the HX-52, but I am not holding my breath. This car is getting further from a 1/4 mile setup.

I am keeping the valve cover. It is different and fakes too many people out. It always gets a chuckle out of people.

Steven

Still drooling over your intercooler setup. My probeGT/Mx6 intercooler wouldn't fit like that without serious modification.

But the exducer's and turbine wheels tell much more to the tale. Either way, that better be a big stick. From all parties. It is going to take a whole bunch with such big weeners coming to the table.

If I take third I would be proud.
