Well I figure I will add a update. I am still waiting for my ARP head studs to come in from lordco. They should be in tomorrow hopefully, then I can finish this damn thing!

Today I checked my valve clearances to make sure that after machining my head down over the suggested limit that I would not have any problems. I took some "special" putty and put it on all 4 areas of the pistons where the valves would hit. I put on a old headgasket and put the head back on and timed it. Surprizingly the timing marks still all lined up perfect. Maybe a tiny bit off but not enough for me to notice. I turned the engine over 6 times, checked the marks again, which all lined up good, and gave it another 6 turns untill the marks lined up once again. I then took the timing belt off and all the head bolts and removed the head. What do you know! There wasn't one indent in the putty from the valves. Sounds good to me!

Oh I should also add that I ran into a problem when I installed the lifters/rockers/cams back into the head. After doing so all the valves were no where near coming close to seating properly. I thought something was messed up and I got nervous. Went searching around on dsmforums.com and found out that it is normal for the lifters to take a bit to bleed down after installing them. I waited 30 minutes or so and then all the valves seated themselfs down perfectly. I was happy!

Wish me luck tomorrow as I will be hopefully getting her running!

Well I got my ARP's and my new headgasket. Today is the moment of truth for this car. Will the budget build prevail.

Well I got the car starter. turned it off right away. Filled it up with coolent. Started it again and it started really hard, sounded like it was running off 3cyl and then cleared up and ran good. Except for the massive amounts of white smoke out the exhuast again!

DAMN IT! WTF
Same cylinder too. I took the plug out of Cylinder #1 and actually watched the coolent pool up in the piston. Not fun.

I dont know what to do know. I guess save up for a used head and try it all over again....

Bummer.....well, you tried to make it happen, at least. Surely, the engine block is good. Maybe that head just wants to let go after all?

Well I finally got her running properly! I used a Hyundai Elantra head (1.6L) and put it on there. The head was $39.99 and it was $100 to pressure test my old head to see if it was screwed. I opted to just buy the new head and try it out instead of paying $100 to find out my head is bad anyways. Turned out to be a good idea! No more coolant and white smoke out the exhuast, I guess my other head was cracked after all. WAHHHOOOOO! Im so happy now. I dont even notice a difference in power with the 1.6L head and smaller cumbustion chambers. If anything I notice more throttle responce with the higher compression I have now. (8.2:1)

Here are a couple pics i snapped while working on the talon awd today.

This is before I started to take it apart. It was snowing HARD outside to i pulled the talon into the garage to do the work. You can see my Eagle Summit in the background.

This is while I was swapping the lifters, rocker arms, and turbo cams, over from the turbo head.

And here is the engine after I got the new 1.6L head bolted onto the 4g63t block.

Thats it for now. I will post some more pics once I get it all assembled. After taking the head off three times I got it to work. Way too much work! I definalty do not want to deal with that again.

Well here are the final pictures of it all done. I drove it home from my parents house in Merritt to Kamloops today and it ran awesome. Ran like a champ. And dont worry I will be going to a body shop when I get the money to paint all the silver bottom areas all black.

The interior will be cleaned and vaccumed soon!

Okay, update time. So I fixed the coolent leak last time I posted. So friday night im out at a house party with friends and im reving the engine up to show my buddies the turbo spool. Anyways pressure found another hose that was weak (heater core hose this time) and it blows up and shoots coolent 10 feet into the air all over everything. No biggy, got a new hose in the moring and fixed it up and drove it back home. Go to chevron and fill the talon up with some 94 octane. Install MBC and crank it to around 11-12 psi. WOW what a difference, car pulls much harder now. Go to merge on to the highway and I go WOT in 1st gear. BANG, sputter sputter, stall. Hrmmm, for a second I think thats it, I blew her up, but then I remember the messed up tridon style clamp on one of the intercooler pipes. So I go look and wala! blew a pipe out of the coupler/clamp. I put it backtogether and turn my boost down and go to lordco and pick up a T-bolt clamp. Install that and turn the boost back up to 11-12. No more pipes blowing off and also my car doesn't make a loud whitsling noise anymore! I guess there was a boost leak from that coupler/clamp that used to be on there. So anyways its running awesome so far. Im going to datalogg it tomorrow to check for knock and make sure everything is doing OK.

Oh I also have a noise on deceleration when I let off the throttle (only when in gear) what sounds like a grinding or whirring. I know its not the tranny/tcase as the car made the same noise before, and I changed the tranny/tcase. Sounds like its coming from the Driveshaft. Would the carrier bearings gone bad make this noise? or a bad U-joint? When I accelerate I dont get any noise at all, only when I let off the gas. Also when decelerating if I take it out of gear or put the clutch in it also makes the noise go away.

If it was the carrier bearing, it would make a noise [or vibration] on decel regardless of clutch engagement. If you're NOT hearing a noise on decel when the car is out of gear, then I would suggest checking the T/O bearing, the tranny, the t-fer case, or the rear end.

Hope this helps!
