Does a 1G ECU have to have eprom to be able to use DSM Link? Thanks.

Yes, it has to be a E-prom chip in the ECU. Your stock colt ECU should be a E-prom and can be used for DSMlink. The Colt ECU is missing one circuit for the boost gauge. No big deal as there is no gauge on the dash. I am using my factory 89 colt ECU for my DSMlink.

Hope this helps

Yes that helps, but wait... do are you saying all csm ECUs can handle DSM Link? I thought csm ECUs had to have eprom as well... I have an 89 mirage turbo and I don't think I have eprom. Thanks.

All turbo 89 4G based cars should have a E-prom ECU and most 90's also. DSM/CSM does not matter. They always make the first year or so a E-prom incase something is majorly wrong with them they can issue a recall and reflash them at the dealer.

If you want pull the ECU out from the right side of you dash and look at the cover it should have a large "E" on it. If it does or does not you can open the case with the 4 phillips screws and look inside to see if it is.

E will look like this:

Non eprom vs Eprom:

these pics are from the DSMlink site under the FAQ

They don't talk much about the Colt/Mirage stuff much there, but it is almost all the same as the DSM stuff. 89 CSM is basicly the same as a 90 DSM.

Oh yeah and if you have not have dave and thomas fix the capacitors while they are in there doing the chip install. They will know what you are talking about.

And another question, other than being able to run DSM Link with eprom, what is the main purpose of eprom? How is an ECU with eprom better than an ECU without eprom, other than being able to run DSM Link of course... Thanks.

A eprom is kinda like the memory in your computer now, well thats RAM...let me explain.

A normal ECU (non Eprom)has a ROM chip in it "Read only memory" It has a set program in it for fuel, timing etc. It cannot be reprogrammed in anyway. To change anything you need to replace the ECU.

A Eprom "E" I think means electronic "PROM" (Programmable Read Only Memory" Meaning that it can be changed. That is what DSMlink Does. It just rewrites the program inside the ECU to remake the fuel, timing etc table. The extra chip in there they are showing in the pic is the prom.

I would suggest you have them install "socket" the chip as there are a lot of people who post on the boards sating that there car won't start...etc when they have it installed "socketed" by somebody else.

As a factory ECU in a unmodified car just driving around niether ECU is better. The reason the E-prom is better is because you can mod it to do DSMlink, TMO...etc. type stuff.

Check the archives for ECU's and Eprom listed numbers to look for. I have been updating it whenever I came across useful information.

ECU swapper thread in the archives.

This is not true. Not all c53 turbos came with an eprom ecu, mine didn't, and also many other's.
