Has anybody tried comparing the $28 B&G Synchromesh vs the $8 Pennzoil Synchromesh. I just put the Pennsoil in my AWD Talon, and I do not like it at all. The stock fluid felt 10 times better than this. My car does not like to get into reverse like it used and the synchros feel real notchy. I was just checking because I did not want to spend the extra money for the B&G if it felt the same. Thanks guys!

Well, there are two different kinds of BG Synchroshift. There's the $28 per quart stuff and there's the $9 per quart stuff. The $28 stuff is synthetic, and I've heard good things about it, but I think it costs way too much money.

The Pennzoil Synchromesh is meant to be a substitute for the factory GM Synchromesh tranny fluid, and it works well. I run it in my car simply because it's way easier to get than BG Synchroshift, and my car shifts fine. I don't think it's any better or worse than the $9 per quart BG, but you can't compare it to the $28 per quart BG.

Another worthy contender is the Royal Purple Synchromax fluid, I've used that before with decent results as well, and i think it's around $10 per quart.

you can also mix it 50/50 with the factory recommend gear oil to get the high pressure protection that 80/90w offers

If speed kills, then i shoulda been dead awhile ago. There is no such thing as "Too Much Power". There is no excuse for a lost race. Do you view the rev limiter as a fun limiter?or as a shift point? And we all know, more boost=more fun.

As a third option, I have been using Castrol Hypoy C,(it's for bikes and ATVs ,80w-90) I found it at O'Reilly Auto Parts. It is like $2 or $3 a quart, and works great. Also being as cheep as it is I replace it every time I change my oil. Any gear oil will get old and burnt, but changing every 3000 miles keeps everything fresh and happy.
I am on my third change of the Castrol and my tranny shifts better than it ever has, And I have used B&G and pennzoil on separate occasions and will continue to use this.

It has been debated for ever on what oil is best/better for a manual trans. A manual trans is a give take. The bearings need lube. The gears need something thick to absorb shock.....on the other hand the synchros work on friction and the slicker a oil the less they can work, also they want thin fluid so the fluid can escape the synchro on shifts.


When I go to the drag strip I run ATF in the trans. Thin stuff, but shifts like butter. Don't wanna get it hot though (not that crazy GM does this from the factory).

For street racing (repeated highway pulls) I run 80w-140.

I have tried every kind of fluid made that I could dump into a trans. This is the best combo I have come up with.

If by chance I am going to drive to the drag strip and expect to get in highway races on the way I run 15w-40 motor oil. (this is what honda does from the factory 5W-30)
