Just started taking apart the donor car for my 4g63 colt. Got the fenders, doors, wiring harnesses (my god why does mitsu have a different harness for everything?) and the engine is hanging above the car.

Only one problem so far...

How the heck do I get the CV shafts out?

I've tried pulling them...nothing. Big screwdriver...bent to uselessness. Flat bar...ineffective. 6 foot long two inch thick pry bar...nothing but busted knuckles.

Whats the secret?

There is no "secret". It helps to have an extra person pulling and twisting while you pry gently out on the shaft. I have them come out on the first pull and others take me 1/2hour. :-?

Good luck!

Same.. Get a NICE pry bar. and dont pry. But hit it with your hand. The shock should pop it out.

Stick a large flat head where you were prying and tap the end lightly with a hammer; pops right out.

Yup!! takes me all of 30 seconds to pop an axle.

Large flat head+ BFH = axle in your lap :)

All this talk about how hard it is to get axles out makes me wonder about why mine were so easy, just a tug on one and it comes out, a light tap with prybar on the other.

I've had some cars do that as well. Not so much on the colt though.

The big problem is the spring loaded C shaped-clip that snaps into the axles groove to retain the inner cup in the differential. Some clips are prone to sticky into the groove more, because the sizes seems to differ depending upon which company sends them out. It's all a toss-up.

Yeah once I had to cane the living crap out of an axle in my Lantra to get the SOB out. The circlip got stuck in the splines and for awhile there I thought I'd have to remove and disassemble the tranny with the axle still in it to be able to get it out.

Alot of swearing and one severely mangled circlip later it came out. The new circlip proceeded to fall off inside and get eaten by the freshly rebuilt trans after that just to add insult to injury. :x

Be careful using prybars as it's easy to screw up (ie crack, bend etc) your transmission housing if you are too brutal with it.

Popping out an axle takes about 10sec. Take a larger flathead screwdriver with a regular hammer, place the flat head on the bottom of the axle where it hits the trans but to the side and angled in slightly, so the screwdriver can be tapped up the side of the splines and case.
