Post subject: 50 trim install problem
PostPosted: Mon Feb 21, 2011 10:44 pm
I'm installing a new FP green and this is what I've run into. The compressor outlet is right above the mount, is that specific to the colt or do 1g cars have the same issue. The housing cannot be rotated because of the wastegate as you see.
Any suggestions would be great.

jeeze, that sucks... the turbo was probably designed to fit on a 2G maybe where the mount sits under the tranny..

I would get a aluminum elbow welded and cut the outlet off a bit so it fits and kicks the outlet towards the alternator.

are you sure it cant be clocked any differently tho?

You could make an adapter plate that would allow the housing to rotate but even then I don't know how much more room it would net you.

Could also make a new front mount. It would need to move to the passenger side but then its too far off the cross-member. The other option would be to move it closer to the engine. I would worry it changed the geometry too much and it wouldn't do its job anymore.

That is the first thought that came to mind unfortunately. ^^

Oh, do you have urethane mount inserts?

And to answer your questions about the 1G and everything else having more room, yes they do, but it still probably poses an issue with fitment for them too.

Found a review of something like what you are now using: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/article ... -trim.html

Found a couple pictures in this thread that should represent your issue well, but not sure where your intercooler piping is going now. I don't see that nice radiator you used to have.

Oh, another stealth edit before the next poster:

The galant VR4's have the same issues. Just do what we did. Make your own mount, or move it back. Or even better, like we have now, we cut the ears off the stock bracket on the motor, used the back plate, and made a steel mount in an L shape for the front mount.

Either way, I recommend moving, modifying or making a new mount. Leave the turbo as is. Unless you try and use an elbow(silicone or weld on aluminum) and go to either side as tight as you can of the mount.

I ran into the same problem with my Hahn 20g. I ended up cutting the outlet flange off the compressor housing while keeping just enough to weld to. I then purchased a cast aluminum tight radius 90* elbow from vibrant. Took that and the housing to a place that can weld thick aluminum and had them do it right. The elbow actually rests on the roll mount when the turbo is all bolted up. A tight fit, but better than a silicone 90 or trying to clock an internally gated turbo. It looks just like the pic that Flying eagle posted up, except that the outlet is facing the other way. You could always pony up and buy a tubular manifold though.

Some of the guys at the Club DSM Canada forum, have now posted pics of the turbo clocked, allowing just enough room to install a 90 degree silicone elbow, or weld the same thing in place.
Just have to figure out your waste gate mounting location with some ingenious bracket fabrication.

easy fix....... clock the compressor housing you might have to "dimple" the water pipe after it's clocked, but to my recollection, you have to do it much, if at all.

Good answers all- thanks everybody!
I did want to fab up a new mount seeing there is some issues with it anyway, but need to get it running asap so we did the easiest that is clock it. But we had to redrill the housing to accept the new wastegate solonoid position. Will get pics up tomorrow.
