I have an 89 GT with power windows, and starting this morning my drivers side power window wont roll up. It will go about 2 to 3 inches above the door and slide back down while the motor continues to wind the cable. If I roll the window all the way back down, the cable will "hook" the window and I can once again roll the window about 2 or 3 inches up before it slides down.

I suspect something snapped in the fist-sized plastic piece that holds the window and meets the cable, but since I really don't know anything about fixing windows I'm still looking for input on what exactly might have gone wrong. And also compatible cars to salvage that part from.

Sounds like you need a new window regulator.

Yeah those regulators have a few plastic pieces on them that like to break over time. I managed to use some zip ties to hold one together enough to roll it up again, (getto powered), and it worked but I wouldnt consider it a lasting fix.

I also considered trying to take bits from a manual regulator an to try to add the motor and cables but it didn't look easy. Finally I got lucky and found another sedan with power windows at the wrecker.

Bummer. So I've got to find a junked car with power windows to fix this?

Good luck finding a junked car with power windows. The power window option is fairly rare on the hatch. I had to order a JDM piece to fix my broken passenger side regulator.

Before you go through the trouble of locating a new unit, pull your door panel off and take the regulator out. It is likely the plastic piece that everyone is talking about. You can make some ghetto fixes that work or are a temporary fix until you can locate a new unit. Here is the piece we are talking about:

This JDM unit (passenger side) seems to have a metal piece that supports that plastic part in the middle. Simply put, this plastic part holds onto a metal "ball" on the window cable. When that breaks, the cable moves free and the widow doesn't move. Likely you get the "ball" to catch when you roll it down and it holds well enough to move the window up a few inches. Here is link to the part number:

This is for the passenger side unit. The driver's unit is either 63 or 65. Pretty sure it's 63. Check out J-garage for a new unit. Here's a link:
