I just picked up a lovely(not really) non running 91 laser turbo for my new project. The previous owner(sorry if its anyone here) was an idiot and decided it would be cool to paint the ENTIRE engine including manifold, turbo and wiring black. Its looks like shit. One of the first things Ill attempt to do is remove it. There is even just a little bit of overspray inside the head since I am guessing the valve cover wasn't bolted down. Neat.

If anyone here has had experience cleaning an engine mess like this... what chemicals/methods did you use? I will probably look for a new wire harness, so that will out of the way and eventually the engine will be out of the car.

thanks

Engine de-greaser on a warm(not hot) engine(flammable so be careful around exhaust, and don't start car until completely washed), should be your first stage. Bring a toothbrush and/or new toilet brush, and wear eye protection. Use lots of cans before you add water. Once you add water, the gunk that's on there that is not scrubbed off will take 2x more scrubbing to get off, so scrub hard before you rinse. I heard dollar store tooth paste and a clean hard (human) toothbrush works wonders for detail on things like unpolished aluminum, and hard to get spots (don't use on polished surfaces).

If you use high pressure water cover anything that might not like high pressure water.
I'm sure others can chime in.

Found another methodology wich is probably safer, but will use a little more elbow grease, and pocket change:

Another guy has had success with scrubbing bubbles!!:

Oh and if you want to save money instead of using engine dressing for plastics, use cheap new oil. The dealership I go to uses cheap hd-30 oil to dress up the engine bay. Don't use it on hot parts. But it seems to attract dust just as much as any other engine dressing, looks the same, and will cost way less in the long run.

You should probably use wax on the body panels though.

You can retape the harness, no need to replace it. For the other parts remove them and use paint stripper. If you just want to clean the bay spray it down with Castrol's Purple Power and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes and spray it with a pressure washer. Repeat for any stubborn grease.

Cool. the harness has damaged areas, so it would be worth replacing. Purple power, Ill give it a shot.

Here may be the answer. I'll be trying this. Basically its a cheap DIY soda blaster.

I would Scrap off what you can with one of those scrapers or putty knife. Any of these work great in my experience;Engine degreaser, wd40, simple green, mineral spirits, oven cleaner, kerosene or hot tank. A good pressure washer be good.

Yea, I ended up finding a guy selling a no title laser for $500. It fit my needs perfectly.
