I traded my daily 93 Passat vr6 for this could-be beast, and now I am fully back in the mitsu family. Here is a pic from 2 minutes after I got it, next to my mirage. More pics to come once I clean it up a bit.

I know... terrible pics from the wrong angle and all that. shut it.

she came with an oil leak I think is from the front crank seal, so the only solution I can see is to turbo her with all my spare parts. Either that or stick the freshened up turbo motor in with all the parts intended for the Mirage. I am really torn about what to do.

Here are a few goodies I had laying around for it:
Image

plans are:
-Give it a bath and a good vacc'ing
-Join GVR4.org (finally)
-Figure out how to lower it and stiffen it, because it handles like a heavy car
-Put on my other wheels, 15x7 Artecs with a little bit of lip
-Decide weather I should throw in the turbo motor or fix the N/A one and turbo it with my spare stock parts
-find the single-DIN brackets and install a stereo in the hole in the dash

If you guys have any pointers then let me know

-

Nice! You got one of the best colors. Looks pretty clean.

Congrats on the trade!

If you want radio trim for the car, please note that there is two styles. A single 2-din size trim & one that has dual din-size holes. The latter one typically has a pocket attached to it & makes installing an aftermarket radio look great.

If you have any questions you can PM me if you'd like. Ive been on GVR4 for quite awhile as well.

yep, I am actually on the hunt for the one with the pocket. I dont have anything there right now besides a place to put my gatorade lol.

speaking of which, what do people ususally do for cupholders in the Galant? just use bottles?

Assuming that has the standard USDM center console. Your armrest flips back to open (JDM/CDM flip to the side)
If so, there "should" be a cup holder that is stored (removable) from the bottom of the armrest.

If you don't have one (or know what Im talking about) I can get a couple pictures. I have a few spares of those & maybe a radio trim with the one big opening.

I have the "cupholder" but I doubt I will ever use it, its too shallow and right where my elbow goes. I'm 6" 230lb so I like my elbow room, even in the bigger Galant.

I will also hold out until I find the right console bezel, it wont kill me to have a hole there for a bit.

Thanks tho

I don't know what to do.

Keep the Mirage and sell the Galant, or the other way around?

The Galant is AWD, roomy, and a total sleeper.
The Mirage is a Fail-wheel-drive giggle machine.

yes the AWD swap is possible, but thats not the point. I only have one turbo motor, and one spare N/T. I have 99% of the stock 1g parts to turbo the Galant but thats just a band-aid, because I will undoubtedly want to turn the wick up.

I think that I will have to do a pros and cons list.

Help!

I fixed that for you. You will have to do a lot more work to make the GGSX fast. The trans on them is even weaker than a DSM or GVR4 tranny, and if you want to swap in an AWD DSM or GVR4 tranny you have to change out the rear-end for one with a US ratio, because the GGSX has the hella JDM tight ratio...unless you can get ahold of an early EVO trans, then I think that might work. The engines in the GGSX are also higher compression than a typical N/A 4G63, I believe they are 10:1 as opposed to 9:1. Might not be a big deal for you, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Not what you will want to hear I'm sure but I would leave the GGSX as a comfy DD. Just do the preventive maintenance and get it in tip top running condition.

I AGREE, it is slow as balls, thats why I want to boost it.

I know it has the weaker w5m31 tranny, but if the 1.8 TEL trans held up to my first swap, I think this one will hold up to <250hp. I have not read anything about these being higher compression than a regular N/T, I will look into it.

I hadn't mentioned it yet but when I got the car I could tell it had once had a sidemount intercooler in it. I recently confirmed this on gvr4.org when the owner before the last came forward. He apparently swapped in the motor from his VR4, minus the balance shafts, and rallied it around. When he decided to sell it, he swapped the N/T harness back in, removed the turbo-specific parts (CAS, water pipe, water neck, injectors) and sold it. Apparently all the work was done by RRE, even the head, which was freshened up ~5k ago.

I have a line on a Holset wh1c, so the 16g might end up on this car along with a 2g MAS and some 550s

Wow, that thing really really must be slow then. 7.8:1 compression and no turbo?

really really slow. so slow that if I hold the L-key down and raced the GSX, I could put down a quarter mile of L's faster than the GSX could drive that far.

SLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOW

so the real question is do I do a basic 16g/2g MAS/550's setup or do I hold out for something more? I have an ECU chipped for that setup and all the parts, as well as a set of stock 450's. keep in mind it will probably only be on a DSM sidemount unless that would hurt it the poor thing, then I could at least throw in my srt-4 FMIC. I also have an SAFC and a MBC to tweak it.

Your advice appreciated

ALSO it gave me its first problem today. While driving home it started cutting out, I could hear the MPI relay cicking, got down to pull the ECU and a few drops of water roll off. (no idea if it was condensation or not). Anyway, I pull open the case and smell something funky. Bingo, The ECU s--t the bed, traces of crap on the board right by the OEM capacitors. So I limp ALMOST all the way home, walking the final two blocks, grab my spare rebuilt ECU and skate back to plug it in. She fired right up and drove home.

If you keep a spare ECU around because you KNOW that you'll need it, you might drive a Mitsu.

A 16g/2g MAF/550's setup would probably be worlds better than what it is now, or even just a 14b for that matter, if you can find one.

yeah, most 14b's that I see are junk.

Do you think a ebay 16g hotside will fit a 14b? if the free 16g I got (traded for) goes tits-up then I think that would be a viable option for the 14b that I have with a effed wastgate port
