Does your shifter wiggle when you go from acceleration to deceleration while in any gear? The shifter should not move. If it does you may have a lose nut in the transmission or the transmission bears could be going.

Yeah, the shifter does wiggle actually. Only in 5th, no other gears, but it's quite bad, even if I hold the shifter firmly I can still feel it trying to move. Could this be the culprit?

No, shifter wiggle in 5th is normal. If the shifter seems loose in 3rd or 4th, that may indicate a loose trans nut.

I disagree Jeremy. See this Vfaq: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/wayback/shifter.htm
I bring this up as I had some noise in accel and decel with shifter wiggle. I took the transaxle side cover off to check this and found that all the transmission shafts had more then 1/8" play in them. When I tore down the transmission for rebuild all my bearings were shot and the magnet in side looked like this.

Hopefully your does not look the same.

seen this noise a lot on AWD dsms

Its all about drivetrain harmonics. mitsubishi did not enginier in a driveshaft damper like other companies. they opted for light weight and small. because of this it reverberated the noise out the driveshaft. I have had my awd on a hoist.. with it in gear making the noise and it sounded like it was coming from the driveshaft... listen closer and you can hear it coming from inside the tranny where the center diff/or front diff is. Also the noise was not noticable at all on acceleration... just on decelleration.. i have delt with bad tranny bearings before... several times in fact... and when that happens you can hear noises on acceleration.. thats when you know the trans is screwed.

The noise stems from the backlash in the gears in either the center diff.. i dont think its the front diff as i have never noticed this noise in any FWD turbo DSM's... alwaus AWD ones. It is accented with lighter flywheels and stiffer clutch disk springs and balance shaft elimination.

Good luck trying to make it stop... i had this noise on my 1ga awd and i replaced EVERYTHING (t-case, driveshaft, rear end, tranny and engine....and it still did it. when i changed the tranny the noised changed a bit.... but it was still there.

A tranny rebuild still wont help unless you buy a brand new center diff. It could even be from the front differential. As long as your fuilds are not filled with metal filings your fine. oh and i also found that going to soft squishy winter tires helped dampen the noise a bit... go back to low pro summer performance tires and the noise got louder...

Turn your radio up louder ;)

That's some interesting stuff right there!

Now that you mention it, the noise did become more noticeable after the balance shaft elimination. There's just one thing that doesn't match up with what you're saying - on my car the noise is noticeable on acceleration. At the rpm that the noise occurs (around 3500-4000+), it's usually drowned out by my exhaust and noisy anti-surge turbo spool, but the noise is definitely still there. What do you think of this?

I've owned a car (fwd Mirage) with bad trans bearings before, that sound was a bit different to this one, more of a low growl and didn't seem so amplified by higher rpm's.
