You can only shave so much off the plate in question. You may bring it below tolerance, and risk explosion of the flywheel in doing so. Cutting of the ring gear area, the big metal support that the ring gear attaches to, is a good spot to lop off some metal, as is the dimpling on the back from the raw casting marks. That is all the material that was removed from my stock 4g16 flywheel. Custom is the only other way to go, and get lighter than a cast iron flywheel with lightening.

once you 'shave' your flywheel, you know you have to have it balance right?

i have also one stock wheel what was 7.5kg when i take it off, i shave it little bit, it went 5.2 kg. only grinding, i have it somewhere on my garage if you want some pics.

That billet item in pics looks nice. Where did you get that?

Personally I wouldn't use a drastically lightened stock flywheel given I like my legs and other appendages attached to my body.

Makes things interesting if you wanted to put an AWD trans on a 4G15

Yeah because all the 4G15 needs is an AWD drivetrain to push around.

That said if I was in the outback I'd much rather have a rock solid 4G15 AWD than anything with a "Ooh I might just drop a valve head" 4G6x motor. :(

Well, Mistu felt the same way as xlr8, because you could get the 4wd 4g15 combo in Europe at the least. It may not have been fast but it must have been fun with that stock lift-kit suspension. [/u]
