Hey People!

i need to install some bonnet vents, to help remove some excessive under bonnet temperature.

anyway, just asking how other people have done this.

i've had suggestions of

nibblers,
jigsaws,
cut off wheels.

now i've got each of the above but im just curious as to what would give the best result, my bonnet is pretty much perfect and i would like to minimize any damage that could occur.

this was what i was going to do.

mark the cut out on the bonnet, then cover the areas not been cut with masking tape and paper, then use my air powered cut off wheel, however last time i used it on the car i noticed it has a tendincey to bubble/melt the paint near to where you are cutting, so im not 100% keen on that idea.

but yea, any suggestions/experiences greatly received

a nibbler would be ok may take a bit of time but thats no biggy
your right about the cut off wheel after you use that there will be
some bubbling in the paint. but your best bet in my opinion would be the
nibbler

Consider a repaint of the hood as a necessity either way. You may be able to minimize heat transfer to a point with water or something applied to the surface surrounding where you are cutting but consider this: Cut the hole X amount smaller in diameter to accomodate a panel stepper, so that the edge of the holes can take a raised hood scoop in the newly made depression made to mate with the scoop base. _-- <-- Does that make sense, they are selling those air tools really cheap these days and the hood shouldn't be too thick I think. So the heat may not affect the part that is actually not be stepped, it may not get that far out if someone is soaking the material surrounding the cutoff wheel. I'm thinking this will work especially well with those Cosworth type vents or like a stock Scoobie hood scoop that sits in a depression. This will only look sexy oif the vent is moulded over top to make it look factory, otherwise some panel beating may be in order to clean up the fact that panel steppers don't come with attachments that really accomodate sharp corners.

IMO, if you have a steady hand, the cutoff wheel would work well, I am not sure if you will heat up the metal that hot to damage the paint(the hood is pretty thin), but like Tim said, it would be a good idea to re-spray the hood, since you will have bare metal exposed. Let us know how it turns out

i brought the blue ones, they genuine VR4 Evo Zero bonnet vents



so technically all i have to is cut two holes, i'll measure everything to make sure i get positioned right, worst thing would be to have them not straight or level

i also thought that because the metal is rather thin i *may* not have a problem, specially if i took my time.

why do you think i would need to respray the bonnet? i was just going to spray the vents, the paint is seriously really really new on the bonnet, no chips, scratches or anything, hence why i think its not going to be nice taking a nibbler/cut off wheel too it

p.s. if there was a scoobie scoop on my bonnet i would top myself
