I have a 2g I swapped a 1g head onto, 91+ TB. It still has all EGR, MAP and Vacuum lines (well maybe not the charcoal canister). Anyway, I have been piecing it together here and there on nights and weekends over the course of a few weeks. When I try to start it up, it will hard start, then run very rich, and then just die. Then it won?t start at all.

I've been checking for vacuum leaks. I've cobbled together some line for the MAP sensor and I believe I have al the vacuum line tee and capped properly-at least as well as I could follow off the RRE writeup. I?ve installed and checked the 2nd gen TPS for continuity and voltage. I need to get this thing back on the road. That way, I can get back to working on my Colt. Any suggestions?

Ron

you need to get the EGR gone and use a block off plate that will take care of some of the vaccum lines and make it want to idle., o and quik question u live in cape coral? so do I.

PM xlr8, he converted 1 of these I believe to 4g61T with a KM206 combo.
.... I hesitate to say, but yes I believe this is the closest cousin car to ours, but it falls short in some ways. The Elantra is direct carbon copy of the CSM in many ways. What you have pictured in the link, is more related to the C10 CSM platform.

Rono, my first question is how are you able to run a MAP sensor? I assume megasquirt or AEM. If you want to track down vacuum leaks then just do a boost leak test. Blocking off the EGR will not help your cause right now except eliminate two vacuum lines, whoopty shit. If you have a MAP sensor hooked into the manifold and a pre-TB IAT sensor then the car should idle just fine with vacuum leaks pre TB, assuming the tune is properly setup. You said its running rich though, which means something isn't right. What engine management are you utilizing?

thats what I thought from looking at it... now is it the same swap as the colts? IE: elantra tranny mount.. and dsm axles? or will these axles need to be custom?.. thanks for the help guys.

from what i know, its similar to any 1.5 colt swap. i do remember hearing about one guy who needed to "clearance" some spots on the drivers side to fit the crank pulley, no idea what he was using for mounts. im sure it would have its own set of little problems to overcome, but its been done before so its not impossible..

Wlep, new problems, same car. (95 Talon Tsi) Incidentally, the starting and running problem seems to have simply been the car was out of gas. I guess sitting there for all those months caused that last bit of gas to evaporate out of the open fuel line. Least, that?s my theory anyway.

So anyways, here?s the deal. This car has sometime not cranked at all on the first key turn. No big deal- typically on the 2nd or 3rd key turn, everything has been fine. I figured it was either a bad solenoid on the starter or maybe even the starter motor itself wearing out. Fix it when it goes out completely, right? Anyways, driving home yesterday on the highway(and about 120 miles away, I might add), it completely dies. The 1st,2nd, 3rd and 10th try produce nothing. A look under the hood reveals the 60A ignition switch fuse is blown (actually melted-just the little bridge wire part-seems to be a more apt description). So I replace it with the one for the power windows. Try to crank and nothing- and it blows/melts. Same for the 3rd fuse I try.

So now, I?m guessing I must have a ?bad wire? somewhere. I?ve had the car die like this once before (a year or more ago), but it was just a loose battery terminal. A quick twist on the terminal bolt solved that problem. I?m leaning toward the wiring on the ignition switch being the culprit. The car had some aftermarket alarm at some time or other and when it was removed, the cut wire was twisted together and covered with an electrical twist cap.

I?m hoping it will be something that simple. I need to get this car running again (again).

Comments?

P.S. I?m also dealing with the RM problem, as I have a blacktop CAS now. I?m planning on breaking down and getting a EEPROM with a chip in the future, but in the meantime I?m going to try the potentiometer mod. I?m installing on a harness extension, so I don?t have to cut up the original harness. I have two Radio volume controllers- on 5k, the other 10k. Is there a website that documents the process? Is the 5k or the 10k better? Which contacts do you use on the potentiometer-as there are 3. Do you start all the way clockwise or counterclockwise? Sorry for all the newebish questions-this electrical stuff isn?t my strong suite.

Yep, I also live on the Cape. That wasn?t you by chance that stopped by while I was working in the garage, was it?
SpinMasta11:
I was speaking of the stock MAP sensor on the top of the intake manifold. I think it?s just for EGR control, if I recall correctly. I might be using the wrong term, I?ll check and confirm when I have a moment.
