Well classes were over last Tuesday for me and I decided to take advantage of some of this cool weather we're having in NC this week. After a few hours in the shop tonight the mighty 4G15 is out. I've decided to keep this thread going from start to finish on my swap to help others out in the future. Tomorrow the plan is to completely degrease and pressure wash 17 years of grease and grime from my engine bay. Also all of the big items will be removed because as some of you know my Colt was originally red and now it's black. I get to have fun painting my engine bay once it's all cleaned up.

I also plan on installing my FMIC/pipes and building my own 3" catback exhaust myself and I will document that here also. I'm giving myself a month to get it going again but we'll see what pops up. I'll be sure to update the progress and post some pics.

For those of you wondering why a 7 bolt, I got a great deal on a 94 turbo Laser and I just dare to be different. Hopefully it won't bite me in the a$$. :P

There's absoultely nothing wrong with a 1g 7-bolt. You'll be fine. Good luck on the project! :D

Well it's been raining off and on for two days keeping me from pressure washing and painting the engine bay. Meanwhile I've been working on some things inside. I finished drilling out the shift levers and swapping them between trannies. If you plan on tackling this please allow plenty of time, some high quality drill bits and ALOT of patience. I have no idea what that pin that holds them on is made of but it's hard. I also swapped the cable mount, put on my Mirage turbo tranny mount and installed some new axle seals.

Also replaced the shift fork, fulcrum ball and purchased a new Mitsubishi plastic sleeved throw-out bearing/retaining clip. The ball was spaced out using a 1mm stainless washer.

Now if I can ever get the correct hydraulic tensioner from Mitsubishi I will get my timing belt on and finish the engine so that it is ready to drop in. I also have to decide on a clutch. I'm torn between the ACT 2100 and 2600. Any suggestions?

Fixed your pic Jeff

Totally depends on your driving style. How much torque are you expecting to make? One nice thing is that your car is lightweight, and FWD, which means a lot less stress on the clutch to begin with. 2100's take a serious beating for what they are, but 2600's will take an even more serious beating. No clutch will stand up to tons and tons of slipping though. I'd say just go with a 2600 and be done with it. I run a 2900 in my car, but that's a much different story...

That transmission is rediculously clean. Go with the 2600 and be done with it.

Weather cleared up today and I removed some of the stuff from the engine bay and degreased/pressure washed it. It is officially clean enough to eat from. :D Tonight the dash will come out and then I can unhook the 4G15's wiring harness and the brake booster/MC.

That may very well be the CLEANEST engine compartment I've ever seen! Very nice work, that must have been a pain in the a**!

Armed with 2 spray bottles full of Castrol's Power Clean degreaser and my pressure washer it took all of 30 minutes to have it sparkling. Never even had to break the scrub brush out.

Been very busy lately and making great progress. Everything was removed from the engine bay but the steel brake lines. They were loosened from their brackets and pulled out a little so that I could paint behind them. Used aluminum foil to wrap them from overspray which was very easy. Believe me guys, if you ever want to change the color of your car please think twice and be ready for some work to get it to look good. Overall I am very happy with the end result but can't say I'd do it over. Probably would have just repainted it red.

Elantra brake booster, (with the thin Colt firewall spacer, Thanks Berserko) master cylinder and prop. valve. The booster is quite a bit bigger so I should have a firm pedal when everything is back together.

Image

Got the correct hydraulic tensioner from Mitsubishi and got the timing belt on. 4G15 front engine mount bolted to the front of the 4G63 along with the Elantra t-belt mount and she's ready to drop in. Kinda odd seeing a 4G63 with only one drive belt. No AC or power steering to rob power.

Image

I also modified the AC bracket. The DSM intermediate shaft bolts to the back of the block but uses one of the AC brackets "ears" as a spacer. I decided to cut that ear off and ditch the heavy bracket. This way the shaft stays nice and straight and it's the correct distance from the block.

Image

Only a few more wires to trace. The engine will probably be going in later on tonight.

Keep it comin! This is gonna be good when you are done. Heck, it's good to look at even without the engine inside. I'd take the car without the engine or just the engine the way you have them presented here. Good work, hope it all goes when in the days to come. :wtg:

Thanks guys, actually had to work on some other things today so I haven't dropped the engine in yet. Hoping to do so tomorrow. The wiring is getting on my nerves because I'm actually getting alot of mixed information. Seems everyone did theirs differently. Once the engine is in I can start a trial and error process and hopefully get it all sorted out. Still have alot to do though, I'm really starting to miss driving it but it'll be worth it in the end.
