Try as I may, I just can not find out what the redline is for my 92 colt 4g15 engine.

Max HP is at 6000 rpm so I know at least that number is safe.

thanks in advance

If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

Follow your signature, man!!!

Seriously, I didn't think I would ever hit the one in the mirage, but it is there. It's pretty high, somewhere around 7500 on mine.

Not to be an ass, but just to be correct on terms, you're trying to find out your cars rev-limit. The redline is almost always shown on your tach. Your rev-limit is the set in the computer as a safe gaurd. If your car has a computer, it has a rev-limiter. Don't be afraid to find it. It's there for a reason. Your revlimiter should kick in no later than 500 rpm past the redline shown on your tach. Average for Mitsubishi is 300 rpm past redline, but the 4G61 and 63 are more stout.

Actually I'm trying to find out the redline and it was suggested that I just hold the gas to find the rev-limiter. I just put an after market tach in so I need to set the little "don't-blow-me-up" needle at redline. (I have the base gauge cluster.. no tach :( )

As for the computer = rev limiter, that is not actually true. I used to have a neon and frequent message boards regarding them. All but the ultra-base neon and the ACR (koni comes stock) have rev limiters. I'm not sure why the ultra base one dosen't, but the ACR was built for SCCA racing and beating on.

Armed with this knowledge, I fear putting both the clutch and the gas to the floor at the same time :)

no, don't do it that way!

While driving it in 2nd gear, hold it until it starts cutting the engine out. Or I could look for you in the manuals tonight if I get a free moment.

haha... funny you should ask this question. I have the 4g15 also, I hit the rev limiter by accident the other week. Just start driving down the street, try to hit 60 km/h in first gear, you will find your limit right there. I have the 93 colt, but no tach yet. I don't know where to get the signal wire from, maybe you could tell me where you got your signal from.

You won't blow up the car, it will just sound funny, and you stop accelerating. Don't worry.

Let me know what your redline is too!

Dennis

Ok.. I just threw my crap radiator back in so I can race on sunday and in testing out my fittings and whatnot I decided to look for the rev-limiter.

It kicks in at 7k so that would put the redline at 6.5k (safe number)

Not bad... not bad at all.

Sounds like a good point to me. I did look in the manuals last night. If the redline is listed in the manual, I couldn't find it....

Ive bounced off the redline a few times in my car and it appears to be right around 6600-6700...from what the replay shows on my tach...because right after that the tach goes screwy because the ignition signal gets cut to it so it gets quite erratic....

Well from my experience there is no point revving the 4G15 past about 6000rpm unless you have a hot cam in there. I find that changing at around 5800 in my 4G15 Excel drops it smack bang in the middle of the peak in the torque curve. It chirps second with sticky Dunlop rubber when I change at this point. If I go higher, less torque & no chirp & slower.

The 4G15 is an undersquare motor not designed for revs, more for mid-range torque. The 4G61 is very oversquare and hence has low torque but revs to the moon.

Redline on the '93 Excel is at 6200rpm - although this version never made it to the US and is MAP based rather than MAFS.

I own a 91 colt 1.5L, 5-speed. I installed a aftermarket tach too. Twice I mised a shift and went past 7500 rpm. Some kid in a civic pulled up beside me and wanted to race, I droped down two gears (should of only done one), it went to about 7900 rpm and didnt cut out. As far as I know everything in my motor is stock. Haven't really found a rev limiter on my car? I dont know why.
