Post subject:  Look what i found!

I always wanted a original 89 GT as a project, so i jumped at the one i found recently on craigslist. It has a few clicks, but its VERY well taken care of car. Needs a new waterpump, tuneup, and a good cleaning. Bought it off the Original and only owner from 1989. Car has almost 340 000 km's on the ORIGINAL 1.6L DOHC engine (still going strong), tranny is also alloriginal and has only had the clutch replaced before. The turbo was also rebuilt around 1998. He had it garage stored most of the time so wear and tear on the exterior is minimal besides a tiny bit of rust on the rear wheel well and some trim pieces that need some minor attention. The water pump is leaking slowly, but i had no problem whatsoever driving it home.

I guess i have a new project now!!.. As if i dont have enough lol.

PICS (sorry, they suck)

This seat pattern MUST have been cool in 1988 i guess lol.

Im thinking 14b turbo, 3" exhuast, walbro, fuel pump, talon ecu/mas/injectors/throttlebody/dsm smic or cheap fmic as the first mods to this beast.

I want to keep it looking as original as possible tho, and not cut the car up, as it will soon be up for collector car status (25 years), I will be for sure keeping the little 1.6L in there as long as possible. No 2.0L going in anytime soon. Currently the car is 100% stock, even has the original tape deck. The interior is also in really good shape for the year, with no tears in the seat and all the dash/interior is complete and in good shape. it should clean up real nicely.

So do all these super rare Mitsubishi's just find you or what? :P

Looks to be a very nice car and a nice addition to the collection. I agree with you, if I ever find a nice turbo csm I would leave it stock. Too many na cars out there ready for the junkyard waiting for swaps.

Nice find! These engines if taken care of will last a long time. Mine blew at 249,000 klicks only because I was boosting 25 psi with a 16g and then encountered knock :(

Nice find!!

Also, a small request, but would you mind taking (kinda close-up) pics of the wire routing along the firewall for the engine?
I just got done w/ a 61t harness swap into my 4g15 a& would like to make sure the wiring is routed correctly.

thanks!

You can install a VR4 intercooler setup but upgrade the intercooler, and although it is long route and hot style piping (over the exhaust manifold), it will work cool things.

Thank for the Registry update, and glad to see another enthusiast got one of these.

Oh, if you could take some photos of your engine bay and emissions plugs and connectors, I would be indebted as I am keeping mine as stock looking as possible and was curious to see where some pieces actually hooked up. Case in point, the little spongy tube that comes off the diaphragm on the side of the charcoal canister, where does it go? lol

UPDATE:

Car is running awesome. Currenty is my DD. Getting good gas mileage. Not quite as good as my old 4G 1.5L summit but close. I am seeing around 110 km's per 10 liters fuel which is pretty decent i think! This is me driving it pretty agressivly and doing lots of WOT datalogging pulls as well.

New gas is in and its running a lot better. Set the base timing and the car runs fine. Still seeing a bit of knock in WOT below 4000 RPM but above 4000 RPM there is no knock at all. I can do a race senario and get no knock at all.. but if i go WOT below 4000 RPM i will get 10-15 counts of knock and i can feel the timing being backed down. The next thing i will try is a new knock sensor. I have a few spares lying around

Next on the list for fixing it up is.

1) Clean/vaccum/detail/shampoo inteior and exterior
2) Do the same with the enginebay
3) Fabricate and install 2.5" or 3" exhuast
4) install some sort of intercooler that does NOT require cutting of sheetmetal.
5) Swap out sloppy 3G colt Shifter assembly (interior one) for a 4G colt assembly with a MUCH tigher throw
6)Drive car lot, Boost lots.
