Post subject:  Bought a 89 Dodge 2000 GTX

12 hour trip or so and I come home with a silver 1989 Dodge 2000 GTX, or GTi option. It has the Electronically Controlled Suspension, Electronic power steering, 4g63t n/a, 5 speed. Man this car doesn't make a sound driving down the highway, it makes less noise than my ralliart which is still new. Has a "rumble" when accelerating under loads in the drivetrain, either mis fires or bad motor mount I think. 17'' rims, new nokian wr winter tires, the car for the year is loaded except for leather. The ECS doesn't work, it has after market struts but I want to get the OEM stuff working again.

I really like the car, what can people tell me about the ECS suspension other than its expensive to repair. I want to know because I can buy a running, drive-able parts car from the same guy for $400, was thinking of this mainly to be able to put those struts in the colt. Would be a nice addition if I could get it to work with the awd stuff.

People at work already think its a BMW.
Let me know what you guys think.

ECS is air ride shock equipment. You have electronically adjusted valving on the top of the struts and air height adjustment which is controlled by a solenoid or pack of them off the firewall. Download the factory VR4 Galant manual here, Body and Electrical Manual, Chassis and Mechanical, as it should be outlined in some decent detail as to how it all works. Yes it is expensive to fix, but you can still fit regular Galant parts to it and leave the ECS controls where they are for "effect".

Back in high school a female friend of ours had that very same car but in maroon, and it had the same ECS issues. My male buddy, her boyfriend and now husband used to curse the system because she was sitting on the bumpstops due to a leak in the air lines, and no solenoid activation. His head would hit the roof with every bump they went over. Glad to see he stuck around!

that thing is pimp. I never new it was badge as a dodge, thats pretty cool. Would that be badged as a GSR being it has that suspension and the 4g63 n/a?

I would think it should be classified as similar to the Galant GS, since the GSR wasn't available back in that year.

As for the ECS, I also have heard it's VERY pricey to replace, however since I bought my car w/ functioning suspension Im really tempted to spend the cash to get it back to factory original.

I must say I like your car. Let me know if you can find any parts for it around by you.. I might be interested. ;)

Oh, here's a pic of my '92 Galant GSR.

No GSR badging that I remember seeing on this side of the border. It's an Eagle/Dodge 2000 GTX.

ah crap, never even noticed what I typed in. After all these years just use to saying 4g63t, but it is definitely a 4g63, non-turbo.

The ownership is listed as a Dodge 2000 GTX, I cant say I have ever heard of a GSR package, probably identical.

That thing is sweet, but that electronic suspension seems like a lot more trouble than it's worth. I'd leave it there as a novelty, but that's it.

Well, I got the air compressor to turn on today and build pressure. The controller on the dash still functions... guess I have to look for struts next, might have to check into the setup on buicks or the older supra with the tein suspension.

the compressors run about 530 from the dealer,
front shocks are the same, and rears are around 300 each.

good luck

my bro had a fwd galant gsr and it was pretty cool, but had 2 blown shocks and he couldnt afford to fix them

oh, and back in 91, the galant gsr out slalomed the corvette zr1 on factory rubber.

There are no mitsu or dodge dealers up here that are able to get those struts, they probably stopped production a long time ago and finally sold off all the struts.

they stopped production on the struts as well as the compressors. they couldn't get me either when i went looking for replacement parts for my 2000GTX.
