I too ended up ordering one for an 88' model year, that was from NAPA, don't recall the brand off hand but it is beefier than the original.
+1

I used a passenger side one from NAPA on both my 2g and 3g CSM's

Driver side axle looked a little shorter, but seemed to work fine.

Used axle pictured: driver side 1.6L turbo, Carquest rds 3229 - new p/n 410059

Am I the only one that had to grind down the frame/control arm area right where the driver side axle boot rubs on it? Did the 1.6L chassis have more clearance there?

Most axles I use clear it fine, but this one had a much beefier axle cup and boot where it meets the stub shaft. You can even tell in the picture.

I've checked my engine alignment plenty of times over the past 10-12 years and it has to be correct.

never had to grind any thing to get driver side axle on. That new one you have has a different joint on it and looks beefy.

Didn't have to grind anything, I've got a couple inches of space around the axle in every direction. What mounts are you using?

Stock 1.6L timing belt mount. That kind of dictates where every other mount goes. Timing belt side has to be level up and down and front to back. That's where it's at.

Trans mount is a 1.6L mount I think, slightly modified/lowered for the awd transmission so the trans and engine are both level.

I'll put a pic up later

What's the diameter on the thickest point?

Stock C53a 1.6L mounts with red polyurethane mount inserts, all four corners.
Axles now installed with an F5M33, previously the KM210/F5M31.

Here is where my clearance stands with a factory axle on the driver side. Checked with the car jacked up. wheels just touching the ground.

Hmm this is really strange then. The crank pulley bolt is also slightly lower than the OEM access hole.

I don't understand how this is even possible since I have an oem 1.6L timing belt mount bolted to the engine and that automatically sets the height of the engine.

My crank pulley center bolt is also situated lower than the hole also, requiring elevating that side of the motor to access it.

Same for me. The pulley is a shave below the hole, and my axle is similar to Flying Eagle's. Original 61T with a 63T swap.

Same here, but more like the sedan that Jason pictured. On my base sedan with 4g63/AWD swap.

I would say the AWD swap could be a factor, but the stub shaft mounts the same on both blocks and both transmissions so that wouldn't change the height of the axle..

If I were to lower my transmission side then the driver side axle would raise up, but at an angle and then the passenger side would come closer to the frame.

The mystery continues.

The diameter of the cup, it might be a tiny bit bigger requiring a bigger boot.
