Well after all these years, I've determined I think my ideal daily driver is a "tall wagon" or "mini minivan", ultimately with a 2.3 turbo, manual and AWD. Not a perfect place to start given that goal, but it was hard to pass up for the price: I picked up a 1994 FWD auto Summit wagon (2.4 SOHC) about 5 months ago. It's in excellent condition in terms of being unmolested and bone stock, but is was extremely nasty, including cat pee and rain ingress. Although I like the several Facebook groups for these cars and similar Mitsubishi platforms, I still like the forums better for this kind of stuff (thanks for keeping this up, Tim). So I thought I would post my plans and progress thus far. Since I had a spare FWD tranny sitting around, I took the Summit off the road started the manual swap. I've built a clutch pedal assembly and shifter assembly with parts from a 1991 Galant. Also had to fab up roll stop mounts since this is a 7-bolt and the tranny is off a 6-bolt. There are about 6 specific areas to do this: flywheel/clutch, tranny mounts, shifter assembly, cables/tranny interface, hydraulic master/slave system, and pedal assembly. Currenly the transmission swap is done, but I pulled out the entire interior (except the evaporator) starting from the firewall and am in the process of reassembling. Since I had to remove the interior to do a really deep clean, I decided I would go the extra step and put sound deadening insulation in the interior. I started with the firewall, and man does it suck. I hope it's worth it. Also did the typical water pump/timing & balance shaft belts, bearings & accessory belts. Spark plugs too. It had a leaking cam seal, so I replaced that. I changed the oil & filter as well. Currently, I've disassembled the center HVAC plenum with the heater core and am cleaning it up (with Clorox wipes) piece by piece and reassembling. I had an old set of 15" Galant aluminum wheels sitting around that were a bit rough. I had them media blasted and powdercoated white. Pics to come. |

As puchased:  With my 15" Galant VR-4 wheels & snow tires:  New ball joints, sway bar endlinks and polyurethane swaybar bushings:  White wheels mounted:  Firewall with insulation, left:  Firewall with insulation, right:  Let me know if there are specific photos anyone wants to see. |

Just seeing this. I'm on my 5th wagon now. This time a 93 Expo LRV with a 4G93, fwd manual. They are awesome daily drivers for sure. Please keep us updated on the progress. |

Thanks for the reply, Chris. I put it together enough to start it on Tuesday and learned the 7 bolt starter isn't long enough to engage the flywheel. Fortunately, I had a 6 bolt starter on hand, and swapped it, and it started right up. I have the (spotless) heater core plenum installed and mated correctly to the evaporator plenum. Now to assemble the blower motor plenum (it's now spotless too) and move forward from there. I did drive it in the neighborhood last night just to see how it feels. Pedal placement may need to be addressed, but I'll try to resolve with some pedal pads first before I resort to bending the pedal arms. I still need to install cotter pins in the drive axles and install the right rear wheel spacer (left rear is on). I don't like the look of the rear wheels being narrower than the fronts. To lower it, I want to use Koni yellows for the front, which is proving difficult since the inserts are discontinued and the front EVO struts seem to be as well. The 2g Koni's will work in the rear (already bought a set), but I need to see whether to weld on an extended mounting point or not. I'll get it out of the garage and snap and upload some photos by the end of the weekend. BTW, the 2.4 block is still here with your name on it if you ever get this far west, or I ever get your way. |

Time for an update. Bellow is a list of what I've done. I'm really stoked because I just now got the cruise control working. The path was arduous (map out and understand 26 conductors into/out of the controller), but the solution was quite simple (cut three wires). Recall, I swapped the automatic transmission for a manual, so the wiring is different. COMPLETED: ENGINE replace timing belt replace tensioner replace idler pulley replace tensioner pulley replace balance shaft belt replace balance shaft belt tensioner pulley replace water pump replace cam seal replace spark plugs STEERING/SUSPENSION have new tires installed replace ball joints replace sway bar end links replace swaybar bushings with polyurethane install camber bolts replace tie rod ends replace inner tie rods replace tie rod boots seal rack align front end install wheel spacers center the sway bar TRASMISSION SWAP install transmission get cruise control working install braided ss clutch line install mounting bracket to transmission fabricate shifter base adjust shifter/shifting Doesn't really look much different, but here's a couple of pics I just took:   Much more on the "to do" list... |

I also meant to add that the stock 2.4 non-turbo engine and the short gears of the N/A Galant transmission is adequate, even peppy. On paper it's 136 horsepower and 145 pound feet of torque, but I'm not unhappy with the acceleration. I do plan on replacing the 5th gear with one from a turbo transmission (hopefully it will fit) so I have a good overdive for the highway. With the current 5th gear, at 80mph, the engine is spinning >4k rpm. I'll do that when I replace the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros. So as of right meow, no plan to put a turbo under the hood. |
