After messing around with the rat rod for four years I just wanted to get back to going fast again. The truck was a blast but, I just have this urge to push further and the truck could not be driven like I wanted. So I set out to finish the FWD build that I started with my Colt. I am going all in like I did with truck and let the creativity just flow. I have a lot of ideas, we will just see how this thing takes shape. I have no time frame or real goals other than to have it down the track this spring. I picked this thing up at the end of January and this is where it stands now.

Are those LSD insert plates, welded into that differential?
Great way to fill space and keep things aligned.

It is. The transmission i got out of the junkyard was from a 94 and had the large axles. My friend gave me a differential to throw in there but, it needed to have the bearings replaced as I did not get the races for it. It did not have a cross shaft either. I tried to put the pin from the stock diff in there but, it was too large and could not fit in the jrlew diff. My friend just did an awd conversion on his turbo mirage and was throwing away his FWD DSM granny as it was hammered and in really bad shape and needed a complete rebuild. I needed a small axle diff and remember he still had it and it was already torn apart. When I went to get it I forgot it had the insert. We repaired and welded our other mirage diff last year that had an insert in it that we welded all together and it has turned out well. So I figured I would weld this one all up. I did not even take it apart as it shared the same ring gear as this transmission I just bought had. Anything to make it just a little stronger. What better way than to fill the differential with a block full of metal.

I got the fenderwells cut out but, need to cut more into the frame rail on the passenger side to clear the transmission. I also need to cut more of the firewall so I can actually work on the manifold. The good thing i though I would have to cut the driver strut tower to clear the fuel pump but, I turned the pump and it has plenty of room now. I had to cut the motor mount and redo it as it was not even close. I did not change the stock geometry and it was clear it was not going to work. I cut it in half and filled the gap back in. I trimmed off a few brackets that will no longer be used. I am going to have to cut the K-member to clear the back of the transmission.

I am also going to have to figure something out for the steering as the transmission is going to be halfway into the steering rack. That looks like my biggest hurdle on the build though. I also have to cut the frame rail on the driver side so I can continue to run an oil cooler. It clears with the block off fittings just fine but, the hose ands wont even be close. So I have to pull the engine back out so it will be easier to finish all the cutting and welding. Not a big deal as it is held in there by only three bolts right now.

That's really awesome! Looks like the 4G63 is a tight squeeze in there, much like a C10 Mirage. I'm looking forward to seeing this build progress.

Not to throw in a distraction, but I always thought these cars needed to be rwd......I mean you are going through all the same steps and would have to throw in a few more. :-)

That is what the starion is for. And I have no desire to own one of those. I like playing in FWD land. Keeps it challenging. I would build a better looking rwd car than try and mess with this thing.

The rear springs came in. Got the old ones out and the new ones installed. Maybe an inch or so shorter if I had to guess(was really just trying to get something that fit). They are 900lb springs. That should keep the weight transfer really far down I hope. I also spent about a half hour and removed all the windows. They came out pretty easy actually.

This car looks so much like my silver 83 honda civic build especially without the glass in (I have not had the glass in since I bought my civic)and the frame trimming for the trans.

I got all the tar and sealant out of the window frames today. I also gutted the doors. Surprising how much weight was removed from each door especially given how light this car is to begin with. I need to go and get some more paint so i can paint the frame before the windows go in this week.

Total pain in the ass welding upside down but, the frame rail is clearanced for the transmission. I also figured out where I have to cut the k-member for the differential on the back of the transmission. It looks like I will not have to cut or relocate the steering rack like I originally thought i would(fingers crossed)
