I was finally able to experience the "black goo" that has been associated with ethanol. I would say that this car has been run exclusively on e85 for the last year or so in a mileage range of approximately 2k.
Fuel system is as follows to recap:
Twin walboro 255 external pumps
-6 AN supply and return
Fuel Lab fuel pressure regulator
Stock 1g Rail
Russel Pro filter -8 AN
Injector Dynamics 1000cc
50 or 55 psi of base pressure
The car was exhibiting very lean conditions during boost runs ( 16:1) . It was soo bad on some occassions that it would not go above 9 psi of boost.
In my mind the only thing that could cause this would be a clogged fuel filter ( previousily this car collapsed a stainless filter). When I opened up the filter there was black debris in it .. This stuff simply came off with parts cleaner.
When I removed the injectors I knew that I had found the culprit
The only thing that would remove this material was 87 octane gasoline. ( acetone and parts cleaner did nothing). After I pickled, soaked and cycled the injectors in a bath of gasoline overnight, I was shocked to see the murky crap that came off the injectors.
After the install everything is back to normal. So I am posting this for those that use ethanol--Check your injectors frequently or run a tank of pump gas through it every now and then-- it could save you an engine. Happy boosting
P.S I hope to build a fuel injector cleaning rig soon that will basically cycle gasoline throught the injectors for an extended period of time.
