Memorial Day weekend.

I had a chance to do something that I have not done in a long time... Road Coursing at Grattan raceway. The event is called Alpha Romeo owners day and even though there were not too many of these cars there, it did attract a bunch of other vehicles, such as GT500 mustang, old Boss 302, sti's, Mr2 , z06'S, a DSM, porsches, VWs and even some De tomaso's and last but not least, was my buddies 1968 Volvo which I did a bunch of suspension work on.

On our way to the track

Sweet Tomaso

Pantera anyone ? The poor car ended up in the sand during one of the runs

kick ass alpha with a supercharger
Image

Even a damn Nascar which tore it up

The colt and the volvo

I was very surprised on how well the colt did, the car was very flat, granted I had to be in the 4000 rpm range because of the size of the 3065, but it was slightly tail happy once in boost. Braking on the colt was also surprisingly good for a simple system.

Now for a short video ride along in the my friends volvo... Just listen to those twin Weber carbs, this car is soo mechanical- there is something to be said, about vintage racing, the feedback and joy that it can bring, heavy handed words could never express or describe

Enjoy

I agree. Carbs rule!! My old 69 beetle with the 1835 and dual weber IDF's, though not blistering fast, sounded sooooo good when you got on it.

been doing a little work on the tune, basically trying to keep the torque as flat as possible,

Image

the timing is now approximately 10 degrees at 7500 rpm , 26 psi of boost , 93 octane, with 10.9s or so for fueling. My intention is to lean on the car a little more, to bring the average Tq and Average HP numbers up some more.

Been busy working with a clients twin turbo viper ( runs 146mph on 8 psi) thus leaving little to no time to work on my own projects.

more to come as always

Woke up this morning, and told myself that is feels like a good day to go racing.

Figured I would make it a family affair, take my 3.5 year old to the track at lapeer. Of course I did't have any major expectations besides to NOT do worse than last year which was 11.89@ 119 on E85.

For those that know lapeer dragway, it is for lack of a better word "rustic" to say the least, but non the less, I enjoy going there, as it elevates the adrenaline leve( especially) in the left lane which is very bouncy on the big end of the track.

First pass out... can't shift into 2nd gear ... WTF, this is going to be a long day I thought to myself, come to fine a busted shifter cable... so some quick re-engineering later ( see picture below)... I was able to make a pass.
Image
With a 5000 rpm launch control... about 9 degrees up top on 93 octane the car went 11.83 @ 122. sweet the car is up 3 mph and it beat its time before.

Next pass out the injector clip on number 1 cylinder came off, which at the point I had to abort the run.

4th pass of the day, I let my good friend take ol girl for a spin.. I did however warn him that it was a little skaty on the back 1/8th due to the bump steer. Here is a video I shot, and excuse the banter between my son and I . Click below for video
Image

The pass ended up being a 12.2 at 123mph

Last pass of the day, was against some really cool fellows that run in the grudge series of NO ET in milan. They were doing some all motor tests and as I would have it, I was up against an LS powered fox body .
As I pulled up to the line, I knew that I would have to screw with this guy, because he most definitely was going to, out 60 foot me. I let him pre-stage and then stage, I let him linger on the line just for a few seconds, as I crept up slowly into my prestage and stage... as the lights started to drop I hit the 2 step, banging around 5400 rpm.. I tried my best to get the perfect light, but was a little early 0.044 seconds early..

Oh well i was not going to stop, as the mustang blew past me, I stayed in first as long as I could before I slammed into second... good, 2 more gears to go... I slowly started to reel him in, by the 1/8th I was closer... once I was in 4th... I really started to pick up the pass, as we both came to the beams I was staring inside his car.

It was a great run .. where I ended up running the cars best pass to date 11.53 @ 126.2 mph edging the mustang out by 0.03 seconds. If this was a competition I would have lost the minute I red lighted.
here is the slip :
Image

So with a recap 26 psi, 11 degrees of timing up top, 93 octane the car was able to reset its own personal best by 0.3 seconds and 7 mph .

hope you enjoyed my sunday runs as much as I enjoyed sharing them with you.

more later

Glad to hear you and the family had a good day out. This car (along with a few others on here) is special to me. I remember this build from when I first joined here many years ago. Awesome times BTW!

Pulled these last week on one of the hottest days of the summer I believe. It wasn't fun at all but you gotta do what you gotta do right?

Can't wait to see them on the car.

Also you did get the rear mounting brackets and bolts too right? They were in a bag in the box.

Forgot to post up my story last week of when I went to the US131 Drag way. It was just a poor effort on my part. The car didn't want to get into 2nd gear, and was generally just being a pain in the ass.

Either way, most runs ranged from 11.70s to 11.90s, so it is at least consistantly slow.

pictures of the other bad ass cars that were there:
Image

Image

Image

I think I need to invest in a rail 4G63 style ofcourse
Image

I could get a good enough picture of this new cobra jet, there was also a copa camaro out there
Image

sti on slicks.. I think he was 12.0s at 115 ish , that fellow was one hell of a driver.
Image

Even the man Jon from TRE was trying to help the colt shift a little better with some cable adjustments.
Image

I am in the process of redoing the shifter assembly and mounting as it was poorly executed before. More on that later.

thanks for looking

The hinge supports, ripped out of the door so I had to grind the rust material away, and make some new patches
the holes in the bottom:
Image

the top section was starting to rip out as well.
Image

Last night I was able to weld them up with some patch panels and a weld bead around the nuts for the top hinge.
Image

Image

parts are increasingly difficult to find for these cars, so I had no choice but to fix this door, as the local yard has scrapped all the colts that were there.

You are right man. I've said it before but when I first started learning about these cars they were all over the junkyards. Now I know of 1 hatch and 1 sedan that are severely stripped already. Parts are not getting any easier to find, that's for sure. Great job on patching yours up though, probably stronger than stock now.
