need to adjust runner number 4 as it is too close for comfort by the wastegate.
Here is what she looks like in the bay, a little close to the timing belt as well, so will have to build a sheild in that area.

enjoy

Liking the progress! It is refreshing to see something different. Although sometimes I think you take the difficult route because you must be a glutton for punishment. Modifying the downpipe would have been much easier haha.

Lol definitely not a glutton, just someone that does not sleep much, so I have to keep the brain entertained. Just doing what I LIKE to do. Sure it would have been easier to modify the down pipe, but whats the fun if something was easy. To be honest, I don't see any problems here, just "oppurtunities for improvement " :D

^ thank you sir

I really have not had a lot of time, to mess with this manifold, but here are a couple of shots, of the heat sheild that I made for it. Basically, welded a couple of nuts onto the runner, and added a piece of stainless. Additionally a bung was placed to accept an egt probe. It is furthur away from the flange, than I would have liked, but it will serve its purpose for now.

P.S ignore the bolts holding the shield on, they are temporary placeholders.

Additionally, I have been porting the manifold, around the flanges, so that things are nice and smooth, pictures of that later.

Image

In the mean time I finished up my friends, control arms, for his volvo, these things have some beefy QA1 end links.
Image

For the first time I was able to stack some dimes, on mild steel...where as before, I would simply "smear" the metal.
Image

Also was able to do some mig welding, on all the joints of this 8.8 Ford rear end, YES that rear end is as heavy as it looks :)

Finished porting the runners last night, just a quick clean up to transistion the pieces together
Image

a shot of all 4 runners .. I used a carbide bit and then sanding drums to get the finish ..
Image

A picture of the turbo flange, you will notice that I welded another flange on there, which effectively dropped the vertical postion of the turbo in an effort to save runner number 4. hopefully it works as intended
Image

Next I have to make a M10 BY 1.25 Stud, that reduces to a M8 by 1.25 section, that way the footprint is reduced where the manifold bolts to the turbine housing

Additionally the concensus is to leave it uncoated, monitor temperatures, and decide at that point whether coating is a necessity versus a luxury

Thank you for looking

regards

w

Rear Subframe bushings time!!

These pieces were old and dry rotted, which caused excessive movement of the whole rear subframe. The bushings that jeremy found are beefy. However to get the stock rubber bushings out, fire is your only option

Don't you love the smell of burning rubber

Bushing surface cleaned up

here are the subframe bushings with the sleve cleaned up

And installed

Next torch the mustachebar bushings
Image

clean up your mustache bar so that the bushings can slide in

My son had to get in on this action too
Image

A decent effort for a sunday afternoon

More to come as always

I just torched some bushings this weekend. Where did you get those new bushings you put in?

Yeah I can still smell burning rubber. There is a fellow on dsmtuners that sells them. Just do a search for 1g Rear subframe bushings and he will come up.

A quick picture of the manifold, it is turning into a darker grey the more it sits.
Image

I have been working on the rear subframe and the toe eliminators. ( which one do you think is stronger ? Rhetorical question:) )

Image

For those that are going to do this, use an impact hammer with a pointed tip to push the stock bushing out

With the Bushing removed
Image

Then Proceeded to weld the turned pieces in
Image

Image

With The M12 heim joints beefy is an understatement
Image

Next it was time to disassemble the rear subframe as I would like to paint it

Image

I am using products from KBS , First up is this stuff called "Rust Blast"
Image

This stuff has Phosphoric acid in it, so it neutralizes the rust while etching the material, so that the paint has something to adhere to
Image

Image

Hopefully today I have a chance to paint it up.

Finished painting the rear subframe, and trailing arms , While destroying my floor, I should have laid a tarp down first.

Image

Image

also did a little cooking of the manifold, I was surprised to get this type of heat out of the good old heater
Image

With the new heim joints and subframe bushings. This should really plant the rear of the car.
Image

thanks for looking.

For those following the project.

I spent a few hours yesterday, buttoning up the rear end,so that is now completed. The adjustment bolts in the rear were replaced with fresh pieces from JNZ tuning. ( The eccentric ones). The brakes were also installed. p.s if anyone has some stainless steel rear brake lines for a 1g that they want to get rid of , please send me a pm.

Then I had to make some spacers for the rear mustache bar, so I cut some with the drill press (boy did that make a mess). I found this piece of derelin at ALRO. This stuff has a ridiculous density value, which I am considering using to make some other bushings for the car.

Image

I also had to shorten my exhaust manifold studs, and I am awaiting, a turned down stud for the turbine housing from a friend of mine.

So a boring update but one that has moved the car a few more milestones down the road to "completion"

After the family was asleep it was time for me to relax ( my 9:30 to 1:30 time "relaxation zone"). First off was a quick placement of the the manifold to see what it looked like
Image

Image

I had to work on the hood, because it was a project that was in dire straits and needed some attention. Enjoying a nice glass of red wine, while installing clecos is quite relaxing, Try it sometime :)
Image

Image

Checking the clearance between the vents and the header ( I like this picture)
Image

What lies within :)
Image

Time to sand , and paint.

warren

I have a buddy that made me a few delrin bushings for my car, they turned out really nice cant wait to see how the do.

Interested to see how the hood is going to turn out. Do you plan on blending the edges or just painting it as is?

Hey aaron, I will most likely just paint over the louvers and then the hood. The aluminum is so thin, that I don't think it would be worth it to blend it.
