Well yesterday my car decided to play a fun joke on me and busted the timing belt. Pulled the valve cover and I have at least two bent valves on the third cylinder. So the motors coming out and I got ahold of a cherry JDM 4g63t that I'm going to throw in her while I rebuild the original 4g61t. I want the car to have the original motor in it so I'm going to put it back in after a lot of added goodies. I believe the 63 is a out of a 1990 something so is all i need for the swap to work is a 1g ECU and a 61 fly wheel? I have a large collection of parts that I've been building up so hopefully it will go nice and clean. Any advice or criticism is welcome. -John |

Not sure if its the case with all JDM engines, but the one that came in my 1G AWD had some nasty oil in it. It smelled like deck stain and had the consistency of applesauce. Im not sure if I just got a shitty one or whatever. It ran good after I pulled the pan and cleaned everything out, but the valve seals were shot. My bet is that from sitting for such a long time they dry out and crack. |

Well the supplier I'm getting the motor from checks them out and also does a 1 year warranty on the motor and included parts so I'm pretty confident there. I'm just hoping everything swaps over clean and the cars not out of commission for months. -John |

Just rebuilt the brakes. Sand blasted them and new rubbers seals. Then took them to a wire wheel. All I need is clear high temp paint for them. Other than that the car is just gutted and the motors out. Uh … I got a gm maf. so not much I recently got laid off. And now saving for a ring so I can get married. So it’s a slow and painfully project really. |

I figured I'd probably run into the issue of liking the power of the 63 much more than the 61. But if thats the case I'll still build the 61 and keep it read and willing to be dropped in the car since its the original motor for a rare car. Then maybe throw a big 16g on the 63 and a few other goodies and go through tires like I go through... Just pretend I said something creative. -John |

Parts parts and more parts. I'm getting everything I need before the motor shows up. I now have a clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, center force dual friction clutch and PP(thanks Steven), 4g61t fly wheel, 2g exhaust mani, 1g eprom ECU, bored out o2 housing, engine hoist, and a spare hooker for when I get frustrated. I'd say things are coming along. All I need now is an engine. -John |

If you are gonna spend money building a motor, I'd just do a 63t considering they actually make pistons for them. The weak link in a 61 is the pistons and you will have to get custom ones made. No doubt the 61t is a great motor that makes power, but there is not replacement for displacement and the 63t is just that much better. |

Knowing me I'll probably end up building the 63 then keeping the 61 well lubed and on a stand so I still have the original motor in case these cars ever become worth something. Time will tell, but my need to scare the shit out of myself with speed will probably over rule the smaller 1.6-John |
