due to some unforseen circumstances involving large slicks and a weak differential i am forced to undergo a AWD swap, its not like i want to roll around my garage floor for hours on end but what choice do i have..

pull it in the garage and drop the crossmember..

Image

Image

heres the front motor mount, obviously the old crossmember is in the way of the transfer case so we gotta make a new one.
Image

time to bring out the super expensive engineering tools... a sharpie and some cardboard :)

Image

after several hours of cutting, test-fitting, removing, grinding, re-installing, etc i ended up with this..

Image

this is the passenger side. my car was missing the tow hook from this side so i had to make my own. the other side is welded to the still intact stock drivers side tow hook.

Image

and we end up with this...

Image

heres what the garage looks like after im done... :-?

Image

more to come..... hopefully :)

well i've been busy..

heres a few pics.
i started stripping the interior

Image

Image

Image
Image

i also labled all the wiring and pulled the intake mani..

Image

Image

and its out... what a pain in the dick..!!

Image

stock location of rear mount..

Image

flipped it around..

Image

cut some square tubing to fit.

Image

tack it in place..

Image

i welded a plate to the motor mount and bolted it to the square tubing

Image

i decided to make the rear bar removable so i cut the tack welds and made this bracket with a bolt through it and tacked it in place. i will weld it permanant when i have the motor out, for some reason i cant weld very well upside down in tight spaces.

Image

i was thinking about adding some strength by welding a bar from the crosstube to the fire wall but we'll see.

Image

i get sidetracked so i started chipping at the sound deadening crap. im doing all i can to try and offset the added weight of the AWD :)

Image

Image

flipped it around and jacked up the rear..

Image
Image

dropped the tank.. race gas makes your clothes smell good
Image

Image

started on the rear

Image

ready to drop out

Image

OUT !

Image

Image

Image

hows that for an update?? :D

I remember that car being on ebay, right before I sold my hatch.

1" bar works fine for the front motor mount. Might want to ditch the 2" in favor of less weight and more room up there. The front mount really doesn't take any weight or stress. According to the factory manual, the front motor mount should be the last mount you tighten into place, meaning it really isn't taking any of the engine load.

Just a thought.

Looking good man! I love the fact that you're doing it with a base model, it will be quite a little sleeper.

heres an update i hope all this work is worth it

i removed the old talon shocks from the subframe assembly so i could begin the rear mockup.

Image

and quickly got started cutting the spare tire well out.. no turning back now!!!

Image

Image

then i cut off the remnants of the old rearend bracketry and grinded the undercoating off the framerails so i have a spot to weld the crossbeams for the sweet sweet AWD

Image

jacked up the rear into place, took some measurements, and had to cut out more of the old stock rear stuff to make clearance. and i also had to cut off 2 of the mounting tabs for the old gastank.

Image

got my 2x2 square tubing ready for some cuttin. i really need to take some time a build a damn workbench..

Image

got the tubing cut to size and placing it up there to get more measurements.

Image

i made the cuts needed and drilled some holes and ended up with this

Image

made another bar for the front subframe mounts
and heres the rear subframe assembly ready to go into its NEW home.

Image

placed it back up there to see if it fits... it does.
as you can imagine at this point in time the AWD rear has been in and out of the car several dozen times... maneuvering this beastly heap of metal around the garage by myself is a pain in the dick.

Image

Image

i can smell the awd already..

Image

at this point the subframe is bolted to my custom frame rails but its in no way attached to the car, or aligned properly.

more to come !! im running out of free things to do and soon i'll have to break out the wallet and start ordering parts..

whatcha think?
