thanks aaron !! hope all is well with you

What a weekend: sometimes I think jeremy and I work too much.
Here is the run down.. Friday night we finished buttoning up the evo ix head stud project . Saturday morning was jeremys day off, because quite frankly he needed one badly--- that man works way too much as well. Unfortunately for me, I went to my day job and designed some roundabouts to piss of the public LOL.

After work in the afternoon, I still got a little time to work on my beloved colt. This time it was to make a dump tube for the wastegate utilizing nothing but pie cuts. Keep in mind I am LEARNING HOW TO TIG.. so they are not pretty welds, but I want to place things in here to see how I progress as a welder. So lets begin:

Here is the first set ( in hind sight I needed to clean that slag of a little better on one cut. ) I was having a very hard time figuring out the heat settings.
Image

This weld tack ( the shiny part), had entirely too much filler, but I think the heat is getting close
Image

this shot just looks like plain shit.. Notice, poor to no heat, on the glob in one of the cuts, then the fusion no filler weld next to it has too much heat
Image

A shot of the tubing showing compound curve ( most cuts are between 8 - 10 degrees of separation
Image

A friend of mine came over to show me some of the settings, you can see the full weld in one of the cuts, that had appropriate color and this time the tube was back purged as well, which made the puddle flow better with 0.045 thickness filler rod
Image

Bare with me... I am learning.

more later.

Not bad! If you don't like how a weld looks you grind it down and do it again!

^ of for sure, I am a surgeon with a MIG welder, but Tig welding stainless steel is very challenging for me.

I tried TIG welding for a week. My philosophy is if MIG does the same job and just-so-happens to be a much easier technique then why do I need to TIG weld anything? HAHA

LOL..... Yup and then I wanted to start getting fancy. My ultimate goal is to be able to fabricate things with any material of my liking. I figure once I become proficient in the the technique of tig welding, then I can make things out of exotic materials such as inconel, and titanium.

Tig welding isn't easy but once you get the hang of it, the posibility of fabrication is only limited by your imagination. Plus for something like a header, I wouldn't want any slag or over penetration of material becoming dislodged and ruining my expensive turbine wheels ;)

Hope you like to bag your welding environment for crazy welds on titanium and other metals which require this awesome technique. Seen some super car shops doing things like that for high end exhaust. Maybe there will be a career in it for you if you get far enough into it. :supz:

Man I don't need any more careers.. I m trying to downsize all the jobs and businesses I have

Civil Engineer By day --- helps for insurance on the family
Mechanic at night --- antilagracing.com --- helps keeps 3 race cars going
Mass Air Flow Calibration and Prototying for Heating Cooling Industry Company -- Precision flow labs on weekends
Rental Property--- to suppliment my 2 year olds college fund which is going to be like 300,000 dollars in 16 years

FML--- so getting another job or career is not possible, not to mention being an insomniac isn't being kind to my body.

I was able to get my louver panels in. These are made out of aluminum. Here is how to they come with a large flanged area.

Image

I wanted to keep them slightly angled so that they follow the body line , that is in the hood.

After some trimming , measuring, cutting, measuring, trimming, cutting and then cleckoing some starter pieces in, this is how it turned out

Next will be the cut the under side of the hood where the louvers are , along with the skeleton structure underneath to reduce the weight of the hood in general. After that , its time for primer and paint, so that it looks integrated .

Anyway I have beeen practising or more like burning my stainless dump tube. Remember people I am LEARNING so these welds are butt fruit and banana ugly, but I feel I am using the best techniques that I know how,

First up, I bought a ck gas saver lense with diffuser cup ( this really is pretty cool, bc I can actually see my weld through the pyrex, plus the little screen helps diffuse the argon a little better than an open cup
Image

I then started to back purge the entire dump tube flooding the piss out of it ( 10cfh)

So on to the welds, using 0.045 308 filler, Amperage 50 ( 3/4 throttle), pre flow 0.1, post flow 5 secs... gas sheilding 12cfh

Image

The bottom weld in the picture looks like too much amerage, but holy shit we have some color this time, instead of black grey garbage ( no dimes)
The weld above it you can see how I am having a hard time with maintaining that puddle by the grey dime

Image

this was very hard for me to do and consequently I burnt the metal here, I just couldn't get the weld to wash in evenly at the heat setting

Image

a little better than the other side but still pretty poor
Image

showing the weld puddle inside the tube, looks exactly like it is outside, full penetration and good color, I am very happy about this
Image

left a nice crater hole in the blue marking, I have to learn to taper off the heat slowly while adding a little filler, or maybe even go in a circular motion.
Image

and some more general shitty shots
Image

Image

comments , critiquing and LOLs are welcome

My hands are good, I m tanned anyway ;)

The parts really don't get as hot as you may think, since I am doing 2 strikes, for a couple of seconds then post flowing the gas for 7 secs after the weld, then again 2 strikes for a couple of seconds... stop ... post flow for 7 seconds on the weld... the reason why you are seeing the graying in some areas is because of the inconsistent distance of the tungsten to the pipe.

I'm a welder by trade and I GTAW for a living. Good work on doing your research and the back flow fixture, just keep practicing your flow and rod feed.
You get an A for that work, keep it up!

Edit: Not sure if your torch pic above is represinitive of how far out you were running your tungstan but the genaral rule of thumb I use is no more than 2x the dia of the rod past the end of the cup.
