Ok so I think Ill be changing out my weak 65amp Mitsubishi crap alternator sometime in the near future. I have really low volt reading, even when the alternator plug in unplugged. Im going to go the saturn upgrade route. Saturn Alternator from a 93-99 Saturn 1.9L dohc The benefit is a more powerful and CHEAPER alternator.

I seriously need this too. I worry about the pulley lining up correctly, and being able to get the correct width pulley. With the stock alternator, I only have around 10mm between the pulley and my frame rail, and the end of the alternator shaft only clears by around 5mm.

I think having electricity in the car would improve the performance of the cooling fan, the ignition system, and the fuel pump. I'm sick of seeing battery voltage on link displaying 12.7-13.2 all the time.

im in the same boat 12.7-13.2 all the time. On dsms you can just unplug the alternator to not restrict it but thats not even working. Ill be going to the junkyard tomorrow looking for that and some other things. That bolt your talking about it will be different for the saturn alternator and shouldnt be in the way for you.

check this post out.

I finally made the switch, and I couldn't be happier. I went with a 94 3.4L Camaro alternator that's 105 amps, and I had my stock pulley drilled out to fit. It only costed $76 for a lifetime unit, and I'm now logging ~14.5 volts at all times. I went through two of those crappy rewound "140A" piles of carp before I learned my lesson. Those things cost a fortune, and only last a month.
The car just seems to run better all around. Stoked!

Direct fit or did you have to modify it?

I have a Saturn alternator on my DSM with the Jay Racing relocation kit. I've had a lot of issues with this setup, but the alternator itself has been good. I think they put out about 100 amps. The pulley lines up fine, but they are a 5-rib pulley as opposed to ours which are 4 ribs. You'll have to run a custom belt size, but that's not really a problem. You will also have to wire this alternator in yourself, as none of the plugs match up, but it's not too hard if you know how to wire. There are tons of write-ups on other DSM forums, as this is a popular conversion. If you can find a GVR4 alternator, they are 90 amps, and will obviously bolt right in, but they are usually really expensive.
