i want to use an hose and fittings for my radiator hoses what size are people useing to weld to there t stat housing and water pipe is it a -12 or -16

Measure the internal diameter of the outlet of the thermostat in 1/16ths. The number in AN designations refers to how many 1/16ths the internal diameter of the fitting or hose is. So #6 AN is 3/8"(6/16") internal diameter or so on.

I run -12 without issue. Most folks go -16 though. -12 will get it done, is cheaper and easily available to most local metro areas.

Depends on how you plan to use the car. I personally wouldn't run anything smaller than -16. I'm running -20 on my project.
