i ended up picking a non turbo ofh from a elantra. it has two blocked off ports what are those for.

is it ok to not run the water to oil, oil cooler on a dsm? im wanting to swap to a mighty max oil filter housing. |

Why would you want to run it? It just makes things more complicated having an extra water feed and return line for that thing. It's not terribly effective as an oil cooler, I think the main reason Mitsu used coolant instead of air was to warm the oil up quicker in colder climates. It is good to maintain the oil at a constant temp though too, and it's best to have your oil and water temps be pretty close together if you can, so that goes both ways.

I currently have neither an oil cooler nor coolant running through my turbo. GASP! You will be just fine without an oil cooler. Even the 1Gs that had the external oil to air cooler had thermostatic plugs that would open and allow oil to pass through once the engine had warmed. |

Also, factory 4g61t's didn't have an oil cooler either. |

Mitsubishi put the oil cooler on there for a reason and they are not the only car manufacture to put oil coolers on their sportier, (turbo charged), car lines. IMO, the oil to water unit will help warm the engine faster, the oil to air cooler will cool better. Really its you choice on what to do here, depending on you driving habits and what the cars intentions are. Lots of people use the D50/MM front facing OFH because of space issues, a lot of those same cars also have no power steering too, mostly because they are track/weekend cars. I have a 90 OFH and cooler in my CSM and fitting the air to oil heat exchanger is a PITA. For simplicity sakes just use a DSM 2L non turbo OFH, unless you have a forward facing D50/MM unit. |

To simply answer your question. Yes, it is ok to run the mighty max oil filter housing. I have one on my talon and mirage. |

There's a Finnigan rod in one blocked off port. And a Johnson bearing behind the other. |

On 2Gs one of the blocked off holes is used to oil the turbocharger. But otherwise they are for whatever you please. |

Those ports are there for the manufacturing process. Passages had to be drilled so oil will flow to and from the filter. The plugs are there to keep you from leaving your oil on the ground, and your rods inside your block. |
