Post subject:  thoughts on a destroker?

Id like to know some thoughts on building a destroker. I have the internals from a 61 that was in my car and a 63 block that needs a complete rebuild. I was wondering if it was worth the save in money to use the 61 crank in the 63. Also, are there any benefits in doing this other than saving money in my case? I know it will produce some extra low end torque and allow me to rev higher.

Has anyone done this?

Discussion??? and.....GO!!

Arent destrokers made with a 2.4 block and 2l crank?

Have you priced out pistons yet, I'm speculating but I bet a 2l, will be cheapest, followed by the 2.3/2.4/2.1. I've not heard of any one building a destroked 2l block.

and you would probably end up (after spending tons of money)..with something around a 1.8L engine... so basically it will be unique...but a waste of money.

its not worth it, you would need totally custom pistons and rods. ive actually went so far as to have the crank in the block. plus you come out with a 1.7 which really is not enough diplacement. also your think is a bit off you loose low end torque to gain higher rev-ablity. how high are you trying to rev?

actually i belive you can do it with off the shelf parts with a 156mm rod and a standard height piston, dont quote me on that but since the deck height on a 61t is 6mm shorter and the rods are all 150mm then you gotta make it up someware

destroker is totally worth it with a big turbo setup. But you will end up spending a lot of money on everything from a oil system to a transmission. 10,500+rpms sounds nice. :)

correction on my initial comment.. less torque. and the whole point wasnt to spool a larger turbo, its to have a more street car I.E less torque steer and wheelspin and ull rev more efficiently. then once ur moving u hit boost for another 7000 RPM. and i agree with dsmcolt, ive talked to a friend who researched this and he said all you need is the 1.6crank and some longer rods.

I agree with pretty much everything in this thread. De-strokers are a huge waste of time and money, unless you're building a 2.1 de-stroker out of a 4G64. The 4G63 already has a great rod/stroke ratio and can rev extremely high the way it is, but you still get a decent powerband because it's not an outrageously short stroke like the 4G61.

Well what turbo do you plain on running? Because if your looking to build and engine for high rpms then your going to want a turbo that will keep up otherwise it's totally a waste of time.

As far as your tq stear, Do you have a LSD? FWD or AWD? shorter stroke engines stay together PERIOD. If you go with a 4g63 no matter what you will need to address the cam's springs and main, rod bearings to spin it over 9k Might also have an oil pressure problem you will need to work on. depending on your clearances.

Also a de-stroker won't help a lot with spooling a larger turbo, It will just help with a turbo that can hold it's power up top. Like a 37r
I'd go with what's been proven to work, And not venture around something new to try.

Usually you would go with an undersized bearing for what your looking for depending on if the crank's been cut or not.

hmmm, 11.0:1 compression on e98.
35r+ sized turbo
11,000 rpm redline

it ought to scoot pretty good.

a 156 mm rod with some wiseco hd's for a 63t and a 1.6 crank will yield something like 1.8L

match it with a jmf drag manifold on a 2g head and you could have some fun.

the 4g61 crank in a 63 block is a 1.7 with a standard bore

so a 20thou over set of pistons and a good set of custom rods with a 4g61 crank and this combination would work?????id like to try it out..

Simple answer is no. All off the Shelf components wont work here. You will either need a Custom rod to accommodate a stock, or Storker Piston, or a Custom Piston to accommodate a stroker rod-and likely a LOT of block decking depending on the set up you choose.

Look up the definition of Compression Distance, shop around/look at piston specs, and you will have to "why" to the issue of all off the shelf parts not working.

boostfreak, it ought to work with a longer set of rods and standard 4g63 (or .020 or .040 over) pistons.

hell, a 2.1L destroker works with 156mm rods and (now) "shelf" wisecos (only to accomodate the 63T head).

For your option A, you would need a one off custom rods. Just as with someone having to pony up for Custom pistons on the 2.1's

Possible? Sure. Necessary at all? Considering our trans, and head options, I'd say no. trust me I would have done it already-I have all the said parts here!!
