Post subject:  Car hard to start sometimes??

So my colt has been having problem starting up after being driven. No crank at all and it takes about 6-10 times before i can get it to start again. Just replaced my starter as i thought that was the problem. The ecu is in good condition and had caps already replaced. Any pointers for me? Need this car to be reliable and not strand me somewhere.

I would maybe start by testing stuff and seeing what it's doing when it doesn't crank. Harbor Freight has a DVOM for like $2.99.

Are you saying the engine is not turning over or its turning over but it just doesn't start?

Not turning over.

But does it "CLICK" when you turn the key?

If so, check your engine grounds, your harness grounds, and your battery connections. These generation mitsubishi's are very picky with their starting system.

x2 on grounds, sounds like something is loose.

yes i do believe it does click. i'll go ahead and check the grounds. anybody have a diagram for the different engine grounds?

Could be the ignition switch too. I had this problem on one of our awd eagle summit wagons. Can't remember if I ever fixed that issue or not before we sold it.

whats a DVOM?

i was thinking about the ignition switch also, howdo i know if that is the culprit?

My car has done this since day one. I have no idea what the issue is. It is completely random when it decides to do this. I have two ground straps that go to my starter and directly to the battery. Nothing.

My best guess is maybe corrosion in the ignition switch, but then why would the solenoid click when I turn the key? I'll keep an eye on this thread, as I really want to get this fixed as it annoys the crap out of me.

A DVOM is a Digital Volt/Ohm Meter. I have the same issue with my starter sometimes. I've replaced battery cables, and tried all of the spare starters I have laying around.

I'm pretty sure that click is the starter solenoid poping out (like it should) but either it's not completeing the circuit to the starter motor, or the starter motor is crap.

If it spins when you jumper the two large leads on the solenoid, then it's not the starter motor, which leaves the solenoid. I've heard people have good results with piggybacking a Ford style solenoid into the system because the original design one is so crappy.

Basically, if you have good connections at the battery cables, and your battery is fully charged, and your new starter clicks but doesn't spin... Send that bitch back.

EDIT: Something just came to mind. We're all double and triple checking the ground to our starters right? Has anybody checked to make sure the middle portion of the starter, and the end cap containing the brushes has a good ground? It's only held on by those two little screws, and the starter motor is always twisting on that. I'm going to mess with that next time I'm in there.

My issue does not seem to be starter related. I've had 3 different starters in there (all used) and it seems to work fine for a while. That led me to a ground issue. When I started having issues again, I checked the stock ground wire and added a second wire directly to the battery. Still no good. I guess the only other thing might be something in the power wire and not enough power going to the starter motor. But why is this issue completely random? It will start 10 times in a row on the first try and then several times with a no start. Hot weather, cold weather, warm motor, cold motor, makes no difference.

I've had three or four different used starters in mine, and it's the same story. Totally random. I just click it repeadedly and it starts, but 7 out of ten times it just starts on the first try.

I still think it's a starter thing, maybe I'll run a ground strap from the back of my starter to the bellhousing and see what happens.

Just replaced my starter, first one i got was no good..my mechanic said not strong enough so replaced it with another one and used a new ground for the starter-battery as i relocated my batt in the back. Seemed to work a lil better than before but still having the issue once in awhile and its driving me nuts. I need this car to start everytime especially my other car is down right now.

That could be an issue there. If there is enough voltage drop from the battery to your starter, it may not provide enough power to turn the starter over. Not likely the issue, but it' worth a look.
