After hanging out in the vw world for the last few years, I got to thinking about cleaning up the engine bay. One of the many things I've considered is the long part of the timing mount. The design seems redundant since the front motor mount controls most of the torque of the motor, and as long as the rest of the mounts are up to snuff that part of the mount is unnecessary.

right?

I'm one of those "it's there for a reason" guys so I would say it's needed. Then again if you replace the soft rubber with a harder insert I can see how that would stiffen it up quite a bit and not flex as much. I guess it all comes down to personal preference.
