Post subject:  Exhaust manifold gasket, should I run it?
Well, i've had my turbo off recently for an upgrade and am ready to put it back on. I decided to renew all my gaskets/washers etc and after doing some research on the net found that some 1G DSM guys run the OEM 4 layer Evo exhaust manifold gasket (part number MR323654). Apparently it bolts right on, and quite a few well known websites market it as an upgrade for the 1G/2G DSM's. So I decided to buy one. It arrived, looks like a nice gasket and fits right on, all the stud holes line up, but the damn thing has massive port holes. I had always thought all 4G63 port holes were the same regardless of year/generation so this threw me off a bit.

So now i'm stuck with this expensive gasket and need to decide whether to run it or not. My wallet says yes but my brain says no. I'm sure it will seal well, but won't there be a dead zone between the head and manifold? Man I really wanted to get this thing bolted on today... bugger!

If you hold the stock dsm exhaust manifold gasket up to a stock head you will notice the ports in the gasket are larger than the ports in the head too. There is nothing wrong with this in regards to reliability.

Personally, I still use a stock dsm exhaust manifold gasket with no issues. My head has been ported to match the gasket ports and I am also using arp manifold studs. I have never had a leak with that gasket, even with the stock fasteners.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I've previously been using a cheap auto-store 2 layer gasket and the ports in the gasket are exactly the same size as the head ports. It's cheap crap though and was leaking pretty bad.

Looks like i'll be using this gasket, thanks guys :) It's been a few months since i've driven my car, but i've been borrowing a friends Evo 1 for a week while he's overseas and the boost bug has bitten me again, so i've decided to get my arse into gear and get mine back up to daily driver spec, can't wait!

Maybe if you said that last week I would've considered it. But now I want the car on the road NOW NOW NOW... ya know? :lol:

dont port match to gasket size. it sucks.

i have used and reused my 4 layer gasket probably 6 or 7 times. still holds fine with no issues.

It sucks cause of the time it takes or suck as in not a good thing? Cause I'm planning on port matching everything on my 14b setup.

Confused as to why no port matching also. I did it with my intake/head and it helped me put down 230 to the wheels on an entirely stock setup 63t at 16lbs, nearly 260 at the wheels and gaining at 18lbs before fuel cut hit at 4500 and put an end to it. I can understand leaving a step to introduce tumble for better atomization but port matching the other three sides definitely helps.

I think I might get one of these just for the hell of it. I have always had a problem with the Felpro gaskets sealing and one of these gaskets is only like $30 after shipping so what the hell?

this only applies to the exhause manifold and head, the intake is fine to do it to, as well as the manifold to turbo and turbo to o2 housing.
if you port match to that size on a stockish head with a smaller turbo, the port volume expands right at the gasket, then tapers BACK DOWN to the exhaust manifold size. creating a dead spot. leavie it stockish sized and enjoy the benefits of port velocity into the turbo. basically, lay the gasket onthe manifold and compare the size difference, it is nearly identical already. now go and check out how small evo 8 and 9 exhaust ports are, even on 600+ hp setups

now big hp, big turbo and big head/cams cars are a different story.

If I was gonna port the head to match the same port size as the gasket, i'd want the exhaust manifold ports to match obviously, right? Otherwise yeah I can see there being a pretty big dead spot there. That would basically mean a custom manifold right?

I wouldn't call mine a big hp setup, and I don't think any port matching is necessary for my power goals, I was just worried that the slight 'step' created by the difference in port size between the manifold/head and the gasket would affect flow somewhat. From what everyone has said above though, i'm no longer worried.

On another note, it's all bolted on. Just waiting on my new banjo bolt and washers from Mitsu for my water line, should be here tomorrow :D
