My 4g61t block went in to be rebored and fitted for new pistons, rings, and rods.
PROBLEM: My machinist says that he can't locate forged pistons (with rings) for the 4g61t. Likewise for the rods. For the rods, we can alternatively use a shot-peening, but we are still stuck for the pistons. I do not know, at this point, if , or how much, the cylinder has been bored.

Querry: What are others doing to get new forged pistons, rings, and rods??

Any help is appreciated, esp. any contact name, number, etc.,
Please advise. Bill Spruill, oldest Colt

actually, your stock rods are forged adn can handle well in excess of 300 or so horsepower without any modifications to them.

then you can polish the forged/parting line off of the beams, and that will add a great deal of reliability, and on top of that you can shot peen them and have your rotating assy balanced, good for well over 400 h.p. providing you can find the pistons you want.

i polished the rods on my '63 with right angle die grinder and brown scotch-brite screw on pads, used about 2 pads per rod and look amazing.

much stronger as well.

:D Thanks, Crackerman, I would have gotten back sooner, but I was having trouble with the new system. Yeah, we planned to shot-peen, but had not thought about the polishing method. I have a handle on the pistons, but it will be another week's delay, at least. Bill Spruill, oldest Colt

The rods on the 4G61 are exactly the same as the 4G63 rods. So basically the choice of rods is endless as just about every man and his dog is producing them.

Pistons are a different matter. Im using hyper-eutectic cast alloy pistons although they were originally cast as stock compression N/A pistons which means they were domed at 9.2:1 compression. The pistons had the domes machined off to create a flat-top piston with CR of ~8.7:1. The crowns were then ceramic coated and moly-disulphide coated side-skirts. The heat treating necessary for the coatings also re-normalises the piston to relieve the stress induced from machining.

Given that the 4G6x blocks are supposedly taken from the same castings, you should be able to bore the shorter 4G61 block out from 82.3mm to the 85mm of the 4G63 and just use some forged flat-top pistons designed for that motor. hmm, a 1.7L big bore 4G61 I wonder if that would work. You might even get a 'stroker' motor out to 1.8L. 8)
