OK so i FINALLY got around to trying to start the car and it started after 2 trys. It idles fine and the cooling fan comes on like it should when it gets hot.

So i took it for a drive around the block real quick just to see if i could put some miles on the new cams after letting it idle for a while.

So i get it out and it dies but wont start back up. (sounds like weak battery) but it will pop start. currently im just too tired to do anything about it today. I may have just not hooked the alternator up or somthing stupid. anyway im too tired to look tonight.

Secondly the more important issue is that 2nd, 4th and reverse all grind and never really engage. unless i REALLY yank on the shifter and hold it in 2nd or 4th or whatever gear im trying to get into. Ive got an F5M22 trans and im using the stock CSM shifter cables here with the top most one (right under the tstat housing) bent down a little bit to fit the arm on the tranny.

Anyway what shifter cable combos are you guys using with dsm transmissions and what mods did you guys do to get decent shifting. ive got EXTREMELY long throws and missing 2nd/4th/reverse pretty much. im exhaust for today so im not really up for messing with the car anymore tonight but i thought id see if anyone here had any similar experiences.

OK, so more of an update on the starting issue.
Ive swapped 2 batteries into the car and it does the same thing. sounds like im getting a NASTY voltage drop somewhere or i had to have burned up a ground or somthing to the starter. All it does is click when i turn the key. Please if anyone has any insight on this let me know. ive been messing with this car for a while and im about ready to give up sadly just because all i encounter are problems every time i fix somthing.

For the tranny you need to either swap in a csm tranny lever or drill a hole and attach the cable UNDER the lever as pictured here. This is what I did and it works perfect.

You will also need to swap in a csm shifter cable bracket, the dsm one is slightly different.

yeah the shifter mod you need to do.

heres a pic of what mine looked like. A lot easier then changing shifters or cables

This was to put a 1992 tranny into a 1990 talon.

Awesome, thanks guys for the shifter info.

As for the starting issue im not sure what the hell im missing here now.

the car WAS starting just fine, now it just clicks like i shorted somthing.....

im thinking maybe not enough grounds on the trans/motor maybe??? i may have burnt the one or two grounds i had im not sure.... the car will push start. anyone had this experience???

i guess ill have to get my voltmeter next weekend and start doing voltage drops at the batt and starter terminal and see if i cant figure somthing out.

The weird thing is i had this SAME issue on my 92 eclipse and i dont know what the hell caused it. never did figure it out.

Could be a bad connection somewhere or the starter going out.

Well, i heard people mention on dsmtalk that unplugging the clutch switch helped their starter issues sometimes, i tried and i got no where. I swapped another battery in (about 12.1 v state of charge) After trying this i got it to start finally. I had issues with it staying running but ill figure that out later. I think its a combo of the start solenoid going bad and a crappy battery possibly. The starter motor itself is fine but the solenoid to engage it i think is on its way out like usual.

on a positive note i got my fmic and pipes in today and i installed them and routed them. looks pretty decent so far just gotta trim the pipes a bit to make clearance for the stock bumper to fit back on.
