| Post subject: | How do you remove the alternator? |
My motor is pretty much apart, so I decided to get the alternator overhauled during the down time. (Also, the starter.) Well, I got it out, but wound up pulling the radiator in order to get it out of the motor bay. I'm sure there is an easier way. Does anyone have a quicker method for extraction? theres a 12mm nut that the alt pivots on.... its down past the oil dipstick neck. remove that nut, then push the pivot rod out. loosen and remove the short 12mm bolt [by the adjustment linkage], and pull out the alternator |

From my experience you cannot remove the alternator through the top it has to come out through the bottom. What I wouldn'r give for an alternator swap on a VW rabbit right at the top of the motor and do an alternator swap in under 5 min... |

Bill, It's cool to know that you're spending all of this time on the car while it's down. While you have it apart, replace as much as you can afford to, and do whatever mods you can while it's apart. It's MUCH simpler that way! What all do you have planned to do the car? |

Darn alternator, under stuff.....

Get rid of that power steering and AC, go to a pusher fan on the other side of the rad and the alt. job becomes a 20 minute affair.  Bill T. |

I've got the Alternator swap on this car down to a fine art. I've been having a TON of alternator problems on this car. In the past month I've had the alternator off this car 4 different times. My big 155A alt. blew a bearing I got it fixed put it pack on and its only charging intermittantly so back to the rebuilder he goes (I think I dropped a diode in her) Then the old 75A stocker went on

I haven't had a chance to get back to ya... The XMAS rush has started @ Mach V. Well. I found out through Tym @ Buschur racing that the info that was provided to me by XXXX vendor was incorrect on the pricing. We can have those pistons made BUT the shop will need a stock piston so they can take measurements.. Your pistons are of the one-off variety as I'm told [ie: they're not in production] So you're looking at.. [groan] approx 550 bucks....... That 2 liter install isnt looking too bad at this point

Yo Geof, I kind of got the idea that you did not have them on the shelf. Anyway, my man had already said that he could have them made at a lower cost. He also advised against raising the compression. "Better to make HP with boost rather than compression. More variable and controlable." So, I gave him the go ahead. No, I don't know how much lower. Thanks anyway, Bill, oldestcolt |
