The USDM and JDM starters are the same.

also another question...are the FWD and AWD starters the same??? I know this has already been covered before but I just want to be 100% sure if I go to use it. I was thinking that since the flywheels are different maybe the ring gear on the flywheels were different thus using different starters.

The starter is the same,

The flywheels are different
Ring gear position is different,

The 4G63 starter works with different flywheel sizes because the The FWD or AWD starter plate re-positions the starter to work with whatever flywheel your'e using.

awesome...I was afraid I would have to track a new starter down. it came with my JDM engine/tranny I bought so I figured I would use it if I could. I am incredibly glad at the oil pans are the same between the FWD/AWD DSM's. I could have sworn there was a difference. I would really hate to have to crawl underneath my rusted out 90 turbo laser parts car and pull it off.

How do you reposition the starter?

The problem I have is...

The stock starter out of the 1.6 with a AWD flywheel and the starter misses it completely.

You cant reposition the starter. The FWD transmissions have the starter housing a little farther from the engine than an AWD, which is why FWD flywheels are larger in ring gear diameter.

If your using a FWD tranny, then your flywheel should also be from a FWD. If you use an AWD flywheel with a FWD transmission, the starter will not engage the ring gear. Hope this helps!

this is exactly where I was confused. I always thought that the starters between FWD and AWD were different. but the transmission just bolts up at a different position to use the other size flywheel. it would be totally impossible to use and AWD Flywheel with a FWD tranny and vise versa. you would never get a starter to work properly.
