what size tool to take off the head studs?

If take it your talking about the factory heads studs? If so, not sure, 50 or 55 maybe allen wrench. Can get it in a socket, I suggest a 1/2'' drive as I broke my 3/8 one (good thing it had life time warranty).

If you are talking about ARP's I think the nuts are a 12 point 10 mm.

Yes, you'll need a 10mm allen socket preferrably with a breaker bar.

Yes, breaker bar definately helps. When/if you do pull the head, be sure that the hex part of the bolt are clean and not full of crud that way you get maximum "bite" with the allen socket. I have stripped out a bolt on a 4g63 before and I believe this may have caused it. We ended up cutting the head of the bolt off with a torch after numerous times welding a soket to the bolt-needless to say, the head was trashed :-?

I usually just cut a ~2'' piece off of a standard allen wrench and put a socket over it.
