Has anyone taken out all the sound deadening material? What kind of weight are we looking at there? With full interior and carpets still installed?

heh, I spent a couple hours a night for over a week chiseling out the tar paper...never gonna do that again unless I have air hammer with a plastic tip. The tar paper alone maybe weighed like 25 lbs. if you also remove the carpet and the fire wall, rubber/wool matterial you could save around 60 lbs. But believe me, you can save 60 lbs easier and still hear your radio.

There's a much easier way to do it. Go down to your local chemical supply place and get a bag of dry ice. Bash it in a bucket to turn the granules into smaller pieces, then spread it over the floor of your car. Wait a few minutes, then bash it with a rubber mallet.

The deadener breaks up into big pieces that are easily pulled out of the car.

A lot more fun.

As for weight saving - our Hyundai X2 has had all the above done to it including fitting bonnet pins so we can gut the underside of the bonnet.

Then I discovered the power of an angle grinder with a cutting blade on it. Started cutting brackets out, and didn't stop until I'd gutted the rear chassis rails behind the rear wheels. Plenty more bits to come off in future.

I no longer daily drive my car. In fact, I'm trying to work out either a trailer or a dolley to tow it to race events. Driving it every day and back and forth to the tracks was causing too many things to wear out. I'm trying to remove as much as I legally can for Street Modified class in auto-x. Although I think in it's current setup the car handles road courses better. So, if I go that route, I can remove the entire interior.

Oh yeah, I have actually considered getting another one to daily drive.
ever look into SCCA improved touring? The GT's/Turbo's qualify for this class

I have no A/C in my car but thats the only thing is removed. My interior is satying, even the rear seats even though I never use them and only allow 1 other person in my car at a time. I think if you own an original turbo CSM, you should not rip the interior out. When I build my cage, I'm going to build it around everything.

I used a heat gun, a gasket scrapper and WD-40 to get what was left over, it worked pretty good. With taking all of the sound deading and all the stuff from the fire wall off I think I saved around 45 pounds.

Since my car isnt going to be daily driven I took out just about everthing. I am still wanting on some piping to get done so I can go weight it.

My dash 20 pounds lighter.

Does anyone have a tech articel out of what can and can't be removed? I would like to keep the interior as stock looking as possible but want the car as light as possible also. I am not sure what all can be taken out under the dash, but I would like to be able to take just about everything out but still keep the plastic cover to appear stock. All that is currently removed is the AC.

The hood, driver's side quarter and headlight, grill, and hood hinges are worth about 80 lbs:)

Anyone interested in a wrecked but still driving 90 hatch?
