Yeah that's how mine always compressed. But the slack in between the top of my cam gears is a bit loose when the is cold. Kinda makes me nervous.

Got the car running yesterday. This morning it was good and cold. On start up I did not hear any knocking. The only thing replaced this go around was the water pump, pulleys, tensioner, timing belt and a few seals. So logic would reason it was probably the tensioner that was knocking.

Glad you fixed your problem,I'm taking mine to a shop to have it looked at this week. I will post up a video I took of mine soon. I hope it is merely my auto tensioner ,and not something else.
