Post subject:  92 dodge colt transmission issues?

Alright bought my 5th colt and this one has a bit of a grind in 1st and second 2nd that is very loud it isnt as loud in 3rd and you cant hear it in 4th. its the 4speed manual as well.

I'm looking for a new transmission if any of you have one and would be up for shipping it i would be very interested. If you live in the northwest washington or oregon areas that would be even better!

We looked at the oil that was in it and it looked like a gl5 gear oil. We switched it out to gl4 mtl 75-85w still is doing it.

sound like a trans issue to you guys or a clutch?

btw bought it from the original owner and only has 130k for 100$ and a 100$ tool box. figured it was a screaming deal!

thanks

Also i noticed that it makes the most noise while engine braking?

I'm stumped over this i dont know fwd cars like i do rear otherwise the tranny would have been pulled out by now.

Thought it was a throwout bearing till i noticed it does not do it in 4th. And 4th gear keeps popping out but it shifts in every gear with ease

It's probably a bearing; those 4 speeds are notorious for going through bearings. Probably better of pulling it apart and replacing the bearing to get a few more years out of it.

Mine did that for about a year, well it actually did it since I got it. Not sure how long it was making that noise before that. Then one day it started popping out of 1st & 2nd gear. You can get a 5 speed trans from the 93-96 1.5L Mirage, Colt or Summit. It drops right in and it's a much better trans, plus it's cable clutch like yours.

Yes, everything swaps right over and works with the 4th gen trans.

Transmissions aren't necessarily hard to rebuild, but it depends on your level of skill and attention to detail. There are videos and tutorials that can be used as referrences and aids during the process. Even if you do wish to replace your current 4 speed with a 5 speed I suggest you at least attempt to rebuild the 4 speed just for the experience of doing so.

yeah I may attempt it. With it shifting in all gears with ease but popping out of 4th unless my hand is on it would you guess just bearings or sencros as well?

Probably just the bearings, when it pops out it means the bearings are getting really loose. Change them soon.

I now have to pull hard to keep it in 4th if anyone knows someone with a tranny send them my way! I don't have time to pull it apart and look for. A bad. Bearing right now.

I have no idea what transmissions fit, but I can tell you that some have a hydraulic clutch, and some are cable operated.

I also know that once you remove the transmission, it only costs about $50 and an hour or two to replace a couple bad bearings. Pretty sure it takes more time and money to find a replacement.

I'm just talking from my personal experience. I have to say, I was pretty stubborn about it too, because the last thing I wanted to do was put any time or money into such a shitbox. By the time it was totally undriveable, and I couldn't find a replacement on the entire internet, I ended up having to JB weld one of the new bearings into the case because it had spun so badly.

So, is this a 92 Colt like the one at the top of the screen, or a 93+ body style like you see here?? :
Image

To fit a 3G CSM (89-92), Hydraulic clutch transmissions from the 89-92 Dodge/Plymouth Colt 200/e/GT non turbo, Eagle Summit (non-van style), Mitsubishi Mirage 200/e/GT non turbo are a best fit, especially if there are any issues with axle fitment. 93+ hydraulic clutch transmissions are supposed to be a direct fit for the 89-92 CSM.

If you have a 4 speed, I am not sure if that means the case and or axle fitment changed at all.
I'll leave for someone to post that information.

What we would need to know if the number codes you have stamped into the trans case. Likely the top of the case near the shift cable boots/holder, just below the head, and likely on the passenger side of the transmission poking out the outer trans cap in the wheel well; likely covered with a plastic fender guard if they are still there. I suspect you have the F4M21, but not 100%.
