I was at my buddy's performance shop today buying some Redline MT90. He had never checked out my car before, so he was intersted in checking it out. After he cashed me out, he came back out to the door to watch me pull away. It was after hours so I asked him if it was ok to do a burnout in his empty parking lot.

He replied with an enthusiastic, "Go for it!". I was pretty stoked, because there was a light mist coming from the sky, and the parking lot was blacktop. I told him I had never done AWD dounuts on wet blacktop before, then I proceded to dump the clutch in second gear. The car twirled around about three rotations before the smoke cloud became so thick that I couldn't see anything.

Now when I do a full lock turn, there's a noise like nails on a chalkboard coming from the rear of the car. It doesn't matter if it's left or right, as long as I'm turning sharply (low speed) it makes the sound.

What do you guys think? Do you think it's the rear diff or rear VC? I'm kinda bummed, because I recently upgraded from a three bolt rear to a 4 bolt, so if I broke my 4 bolt I'm going to kick myself in the ass for being so stupid with my 21 year old shitbox.

Ps. I should probably mention: Holy F*** that was fun! I felt like Ken Block! :D

Heck, I'll just put it on a lift tomorrow and figure it out for myself. I just thought it might be something someone had seen before.

Curse me for needlessly beating on my car. My new fuel swirl pot works flawlessly though. :rock:

first off.. AWD + doughnuts = NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!! :axe:

there not meant for it..and shouldnt be done.

as for the noise when I broke a rear axle in my talon back in 05.. about 2 weeks later it started making that same sound.. when I tore it apart..the teeth on the ring gear were all chewed up..at least these are easy to replace.. its just the center section.. good luck with it and keep us updated on the results.

AWD donuts are totally fine. I used to do them all the time back when I lived in Illinois and it would snow, never had a single problem.

My guess would be you messed up your center diff.

in ice or snow I agree..but dry or even semi wet it puts alot of stress on the drivetrain.

I had a feeling it would be bad for the drivetrain to do that on pavement, but I just wanted to see what it would feel like. It felt fun.

The noise is definitely coming from the back of the car; I'm going to drop off my kid at grandmas soon and go check it out.

I'll post up the details of the carnage.

I suppose it would be a lot more harsh on dry pavement, but the drivetrain should still be able to take the abuse. My guess is there was a pre-existing condition on his car, and doing the flat-spins just made it worse. I'm eager to see what he broke. :popcorn:

Ok it's on the lift, and the first thing I noticed is that my rear posi is different.

When I installed it, the rear diff emulated an open diff when you turn one rear wheel at extremely low speeds; now it stays locked unless you really put some torque into turning them in opposite directions.

I'm not sure this isn't a good thing...

Ps. There's bits of rubber all over the driver side of my car. LOL

The rear diff uses a viscous-type LSD, so the hotter you get it the more lock you're going to get. Rotating at low speeds doesn't nearly get it warmed up enough. Maybe you welded your rear diff without a welder? Hehe

Ding ding ding I think we have a winner!

I pulled the axles and cover so far, and it seems like the side gears have a little freeplay in the carrier, but one or more of the spider gears must be binding on the cross. I can't even turn the side gears now without having the wheels for leverage.

Yup, two of the spider gears are stuck to the cross.

Moral of this story: Don't use Walmart brand conventional gear oil in your rear diff.

Yeah, I've always used Redline Shockproof. In 12 years of owning an AWD DSM I have never had an issue with a rear diff.

I finally got one of the two frozen spider gears off the cross. What a pain in the balls.

The parts are basically garbage. I'll snap a photo as soon as my phone charges up a little.

The thing that pisses me off, if the VC was working right this shouldn't have happened.

Just sent an email to TRE to see if they have any parts laying around. Not that I can afford this right now. What a bummer.
