Post subject:  Summit AWD Van. Final Drive Ratio for rear end?

I have a 4g63t swapped 92 Eagle Summit AWD van. (same as Mitsubishi Expo LRV)

It ORIGINALLY came with a 2.4L SOHC 8V 4g64 engine mated to a 4 speed Automatic AWD tranny. The code off the stock tranny is W4A32-1.

I have not been able to find any info on what the final drive is on the rear end in this car (Summit AWD Van)

I am currently planning on using a 91 Galant Vr4 Tranny (W5M33-NQBK) that has a 4.93 final drive. I wanna make sure the rear end in this summit is also a 4.93 final drive ratio so I dont blow up the center viscous coupling in the tranny.

I just have had mixed results with finding info on the STOCK final drive ratio for the summit AWD van, ANY help would be apreciated..

Is there another way to find out my final drive by spinning the driveshaft and counting the turns of the tires or something so I can make sure im going to be okay?

Thanks guys

If the rear end is still stock I bet its got the 3.307 rear like 1g automatic dsm's do. You can remove the rear cover and count the teeth on the pinion and the ring gear and compare them to some of the other AWD Mitsubishi's in the VFAQ.

http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html

Go to drivetrain, then gear ratios.

Yeah thats what ill have to do. Drop the diff cover and count the teeth.

I cant find ANY info on what the final drive is on the AUTOMATIC 4SD Summit AWD. I guess ill have to do it myself.

3.600 for the auto 2.4 in 92.
The transfer case is the same ratio: 1.090
I picked up the service manual a while back so ask away at anymore tech info you need.

3.600 on the rear end ratio correct?

Thats DAMN close to a 1G DSM AWD MT rear end ratio which is 3.545. I wonder if ill run into a problem running the Summit Rear end??

hrrmmm what to do.... what to do.

Joogle, do you know the Tranny Final Drive ratio??? is it 4.929? Thats the final drive of the 1G AWD MT and the Vr4 tranny.

here is what is listed:
W4A32
4g64
1st - 2.551
2nd- 1.488
3rd - 1.000
4th - 0.685
rev - 2.176

Reduction ratio
Primary - 1.228
Front Dif - 3.600
Transfer - 1.090

Looking in the rear axle section:
Reduction ratio is listed at 3.307
I think this is the number you are looking for.
Look in CAPS and see if the rear dif case part number matches the talon or galant one? Maybe you can just swap the whole rear dif?

Thanks a ton again!

Phoned the previous owner today and for some reason i thought the car was originally a automatic.

Turns out that it was originally a 5-speed car!!

Good news for me as that means my rear diff IS the right ratio!

yayyy

For the rough estimate, jack the car up, take all the lash out of the driveline in one direction, and rotated the rear wheels one complete revolution. Number of times the pinion goes around is your ratio. Watch to make sure both rear wheels are going around. Other option is to jack only one wheel, perform above, then double. Trans in neutral in both cases.
