Well I did a search for this but found no helpfull info. I get a pretty loud whiring noise coming from my driveshaft/rear end area only when I decelerate. I recently replaced my engine/tranny/tcase and the car made the noise before that, so I can eliminate the tranny/tcase as being the problem. The noise definatly seems to be coming from the driveshaft/rear end. If I could pinpoint it I would say under the center console is where its coming from.

The noise is much more noticible in 2nd and 3rd gear when I decelerate. It happens when I let off the gas, but if I do this and then either take it out of gear or push the clutch in the noise goes away. When im going faster in 4th or 5th gear the noise is much less noticable.

Im thinking either the driveshaft carrier bearings or U-joints?

What do you think? I do have a spare driveshaft, so I might try to replace it and see if that helps. This is on a 1990 AWD.

Oh, I should also add that I have a stock OEM flywheel and Im sure all the flywheel bolts are tight. I read some posts where people were having the same problem and they thought it might be from a lighter flywheel.

My guess would be the carrier bearings.

Thats what I am thinking, the bearings for the driveshaft. Does it go clunk or bang from the same area when you shift a little hard?

All AWD DSM's make that sound, just ignore it. It might actually be caused by something, but I don't know what it is. Haha.

Make sure your tires are not mismatched in sizing (not just the sizes but the ACTUAL measured tire diameter or circumference), because wear can be enough to load up one end of the car more than the other. A simple of switch of the wheels front to back could help eliminate an issue that way if there are questions surrounding possible tire issues, and it's free to perform.

Also, make sure your transfer case and rear diff are at their proper fluid levels.

My fluids are good. I will definalty try the tire switching thing out and see if that makes a diffrence before i start replacing the d-shaft or rear diff.

You have a stereo in that thing? If not, get one and turn the volume up.

yeah tons of people are just saying live with it. People have went years and years with the noise, with no problems.

Personally I want my car to be almost perfect. I dont got no stereo to turn up yet! lol.

+2 I have several awd DSMs and they all made that sound don't worry it's fine. Trust me if it was a rear you'll hear it oh so loudly, lol. Happened to my galant gsx the rear end just blew up and lock the tires right up on the highway, stood waiting for AAA for 4 hours which they didn't get the directions right, it was a long night. So yeah don't worry about it as long as the rear as enough gear oil and no play at all anywhere, you good trust me.

LMAO, same here... my 92 GSX didn't start making the noise until I was in the 12's...but 2 years later, in the 11's, and nothing has come apart. I wouldn't worry about it. FYI, the noise is coming from the rear diff. I have a TRE tranny, and I have completely rebuilt my driveshaft with new carrier bearings and U-joints with no change in the noise.

My buddy rebuilt his rear differential (which made the same sound) and had a differential specialist look at the wear pattern to see if there was any uncommon wear, which there wasnt. He put the diff back in the car....same noise :) DSM's were meant to sound like this
